Inside the image.
A square cover combines a bright sky, a large white dove and a dense bed of red poppies. The dove dominates the upper-left portion, its body angled slightly towards the right and its wings spread wide. Its left wing reaches beyond the left edge, while the raised right wing fans across the upper centre. Fine feather shapes are visible along the wings; the bird has a small dark eye, a pale beak and pink-red feet. It overlaps the flowers below and the sky behind it.
Poppies fill the lower half and rise unevenly into the middle of the image. Their vivid scarlet and orange-red petals have dark centres and thin green stems, with a few unopened or drooping heads among them. The flowers are largest near the bottom and left, with smaller blooms and pale yellow-green foliage receding towards the right. Behind the bird and lettering, the sky shifts from deep blue at the top through lighter blue to a warm, pale yellow glow along the horizon. The image has no visible border, and the sky around the upper-right lettering provides relatively open space.
The lettering sits across the right half, partly over the dove’s lower wing and the sky. Near the upper middle-right, “CANEUON” appears in bold white uppercase serif letters. Beneath it, “HEDDWCH” is much larger, set in thin, light-green uppercase letters with generous spacing. Below that, an orange-red italic line reads “I gofio…’y rhywy o golli’r hogia’”. Near the centre, a smaller green serif inscription is arranged over two lines: “A compilation of” and “Welsh songs of peace”. The typography contrasts a prominent, delicate title with compact supporting text.
The artwork has a polished, illustrative appearance, with smooth gradients in the sky and finely rendered, soft-edged bird feathers and flower petals. Its crisp colour contrasts—white against blue, red against yellow-green—make the dove and poppies stand out strongly. Light is most apparent behind the lower lettering and flowers, creating a bright, almost sunset-like band near the horizon.
What the image evokes.
The cover holds two familiar emblems in close company: a dove in flight and a field of poppies. The bird’s lifted wings suggest release and openness, while the flowers gather densely below it, giving the image a rooted, almost enveloping weight. Together they create an image that can be read as hopeful, but the poppies also bring a quieter, more elegiac note; the cover allows both feelings to remain present.
The blue-to-gold sky lends the scene the clarity of a greeting card or a pastoral illustration, while the saturated petals push it towards something more theatrical. The large, airy green title seems to float in the open sky, in contrast with the crowded detail at the bottom. There is a gentle tension between the immaculate whiteness of the dove and the exuberant, slightly unruly field of flowers: one feels suspended above the other, yet the bird’s feet nearly touch the petals. The result is serene at first glance, with a sentimental brightness that does not quite erase the sense of remembrance carried by the flowers.
