Tua'r Wawr / Towards The Dawn
The London Welsh Festival Of Male Choirs
Album artwork for The London Welsh Festival Of Male Choirs, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover places a stone castle against a vivid sunset sky. The castle stands across the lower middle of the image, with a broad, low curtain wall extending left from a taller central keep. Its weathered grey-brown masonry is punctuated by small dark openings; the keep has a crenellated roofline and a narrow flagpole rising from its top. A small red, white and green flag is visible near the pole’s tip. Lower stone buildings continue to the right of the keep.
The scene is layered from a flowered foreground into the castle grounds and then a distant landscape. Dense pink and magenta flowers fill the lower left corner, with dark foliage and trees around the castle and at lower right. Behind the walls, low hills or open slopes recede on both sides. The sky occupies most of the upper half: bands of cloud and light radiate across it, changing from deep mauve and rose at the top through coral and orange to brilliant yellow-white around the horizon. Warm light outlines the castle and landscape, while the foreground and wall remain comparatively dark. The image has a saturated, softly blended, illustrative appearance, with detailed stonework and vegetation set against a more painterly sky; there is no separate border.
Large white decorative lettering is centred near the top, reading “TUAR WAWR”; directly beneath it, in smaller white capitals, is “TOWARDS THE DAWN”. Both lines sit over the darker upper clouds. At the bottom, three lines of white text are centred over the shadowed foreground: “The London Welsh Festival of Male Choirs”; “Gŵyl Corau Meibion Cymru Llundain”; and, in smaller italic lettering, “Includes the first recording of Y Nannau’s recorded version of / ‘The Hero’s Journey’ - Karl Jenkins & Graham Davies”.
What the image evokes.
The castle’s weight and solidity are set against a sky that seems to be in motion. Its compact towers and crenellations suggest an old defensive structure, while the broad sweep of luminous cloud gives the scene an expansive, almost theatrical scale. The result balances permanence with transition: stone holds its ground beneath a sky changing from night-like purple to the first blaze of morning.
The vivid flowers bring a softer, celebratory note to the otherwise monumental scene. Their colour echoes the sunset, linking the foreground to the sky and making the landscape feel briefly enchanted. The small flag, almost lost against the bright horizon, adds a delicate point of detail above the keep. The overall effect recalls a romantic landscape painting, with heightened colour and a carefully staged view in which architecture, flowers and light combine into an image of arrival and renewal—though the castle’s shadowed surfaces retain a quieter, more ancient mood.
