Aled Jones
Album artwork for Aled Jones, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a calm coastal photograph with layered Welsh and English lettering. The upper portion shows a hazy blue-grey sky, deepening to dark navy at the top and left and fading into a pale, almost white horizon. Below it, a broad stretch of very light grey-blue water occupies the middle and lower part of the image. A narrow, faint shoreline or horizon runs across the frame just below the centre, with indistinct low land visible in the distance.
Several small boats sit on the water. A dark wooden boat is prominent in the lower-left foreground, angled slightly across the frame with its pointed bow facing right. Its low sides and a few pale details are reflected faintly below it. Three much smaller boats are spaced along the distant waterline: one just left of centre, one right of centre, and one near the upper-right edge. Their dark hulls and sparse, thin upright or angled details stand out against the bright water. The large scale difference between the foreground boat and the distant craft gives the otherwise open scene a gentle sense of depth. There is no visible border.
The largest lettering is arranged in the sky and upper water. At upper left, three stacked lines of thin, tall, white serif capitals read “LLEISIAU / BECHGYN / CYMRU”. To their right, a small, pale line of Welsh text reads “Casgliad o ganeuon poblogaidd”, with “gan 11 o leisiau trebl mwyaf adbyddus Cymru” beneath it. Across the transition from sky to water, the prominent title “WELSH BOY TREBLES” appears in widely spaced, bold, pale-yellow capitals with a pronounced slab-like serif. Below it, a smaller dark serif caption is centred in two lines: “A compilation of popular songs” and “sung by 11 of Wales’ most loved treble voices”.
A block of dark blue-grey serif capitals is centred near the bottom over the pale water, listing singers in four lines. The names are separated by small gold dots: “ALED JONES • PHILIP WATKINS • OLIVER SAMMONS”; “HUW EDWARD JONES • DYLAN EURIG • CARWYN LLŶR”; “RICHARD DAVIES • DARREN ROBERTS • EMYR WYN”; and “STEFFAN RHYS HUGHES • RHYS MEYLER”. The typography is carefully layered over the photograph, with the large title providing the strongest contrast and the lower credits remaining compact. The image has a soft, slightly misty photographic appearance, with muted blue-grey tones, a bright central band of water, and restrained yellow accents in the title and separators.
What the image evokes.
The still water and widely spaced boats make the cover feel hushed, as though sound might carry a long way across the surface. The nearest boat gives the scene a human scale, while the smaller ones seem almost to dissolve into the pale distance. That contrast between a solid dark hull and a washed-out horizon lends the composition a quiet, contemplative pull.
The title’s warm yellow briefly interrupts the cool palette like a strip of late sunlight. Its broad, emphatic lettering feels more public and declarative than the delicate lines above it, creating a pleasing tension between announcement and stillness. The overall effect recalls coastal postcards and older record sleeves that let a landscape hold the mood, though the uncluttered spacing and restrained colours keep it from feeling nostalgic in any fixed way. It can read as both serene and slightly solitary: a calm expanse with the boats gathered at a distance, and words that seem to hover between sky and sea.
