A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square cover dominated by two large, cut-out photographic portraits set against a vivid turquoise-blue background. The figures fill most of the lower two-thirds and overlap slightly: the man on the left is set a little farther back, while the man on the right is larger and closer, extending to the bottom and right edges. Both are shown from around the chest upwards. Their faces turn slightly towards one another, though each looks out towards the viewer.

The left figure wears a dark, textured flat cap, a pale scarf or high neck wrap, and a dark garment. His eyebrows are raised and his mouth is slightly open, giving his face a startled or uncertain expression. The right figure has dark, wavy hair and a broad moustache beneath a wide-brimmed brown hat. He wears a pale patterned neckerchief and a brown-grey jacket over a light shirt. The brim and crown of his hat rise behind the lettering; the lower part of his jacket is cropped by the bottom edge. A narrow pale-blue rectangular outline sits behind the portraits, visible around the upper and side portions of their heads and shoulders.

The background is brightest around the figures, with a soft cyan glow behind their heads and darker blue towards the outer edges. The portraits have a slightly grainy, high-contrast photographic appearance, with pale faces and clothing picked out against the saturated blue. A soft light outline around parts of the figures separates them from the background. The title spans the top in large, condensed yellow-gold letters with dark edging and a slight shadow: “Co Bach ac Ifas Y Tryc”. Beneath it, centred in smaller white lettering, is “Richard Hughes a Stewart Jones”. The title sits above the pale rectangular frame and partly overlaps the space above the right figure’s hat. The overall treatment combines photographic portraits with bold display lettering, a coloured backdrop and simple geometric framing.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover has the immediacy of a theatrical double act: two faces held close together, each with a sharply different expression and silhouette. The left man’s lifted brows and parted lips make him seem caught mid-reaction, while the right man’s moustache, wavy hair and oversized hat give him a more settled, almost storybook presence. Their proximity suggests a pairing, but their contrasting expressions leave the relationship between them open.

The bright blue halo around their heads gives the portraits a stage-lit quality, as if they have been brought forward from a darker room. The thin rectangle behind them could be read as a picture frame or a simple set-like backdrop; it adds a hint of order without containing the unruly, overlapping figures. The tall golden title has the emphatic, slightly old-fashioned air of a theatre sign, and its warmth plays against the cool blue field. Together, the cut-out portraits, graphic glow and oversized lettering feel playful and deliberately presentational, poised somewhere between a comic poster and a souvenir photograph.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
