Meic Stevens
Album artwork for Meic Stevens, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover is dominated by a close, side-on portrait of a man facing right. His head and shoulders fill most of the left and central area; his swept-back, wavy grey hair is picked out in strands against a nearly black background. Warm light falls across his forehead, cheek, nose and lips, while much of his neck and clothing recedes into shadow. He wears dark, oval sunglasses with a narrow frame, and a black high-collared garment that rises to his jaw. His expression is difficult to read, with his mouth slightly open and his gaze hidden behind the lenses. The contour of his face is sharply lit against the dark space to the right, which also leaves room for the lettering.
The portrait is cropped close at the top and left, and the dark clothing blends into the black lower-left background. The image has a dramatic contrast between the pale, textured hair and skin, the amber highlights, and the deep brown-black field. The lighting is directional and concentrated, with pronounced shadow beneath the cheek and chin. The photograph has a softly grainy appearance, especially in the hair, though individual curls and strands remain visible.
White lettering occupies the lower-right portion. Near the right edge, a small bold line in uppercase serif letters reads “MEIC STEVENS”. Below it, much larger italic serif lettering reads “dyma’r ffordd i fyw”, stretching across the lower centre-right. Two smaller lines sit beneath: a bold Welsh line, “5 albym Meic o’r 80au, ynghyd â Gwynmon”, and an italic English line, “5 classic albums released during the 80s, plus Gwynmon — the 1972 classic”. The text is arranged over the darkest part of the image for contrast, with the main title close to the portrait’s lower-right edge.
What the image evokes.
The tightly framed profile gives the cover a feeling of inward concentration: the face is turned towards the right-hand darkness, as though caught between scrutiny and withdrawal. The sunglasses conceal the eyes, making the expression both self-contained and slightly theatrical. In contrast, the hair is unruly and luminous, its silver strands seeming to catch and scatter the light around the head.
The warm illumination against the almost black field recalls the stark portraiture of a stage photograph or a film still, though the image itself offers no setting to confirm either association. There is a tension between intimacy and distance: the viewer is close enough to see the texture of hair and skin, yet the hidden gaze keeps the subject inaccessible. The elegant italic title softens that severity, lending the lower edge a lyrical, reflective quality. Together, the restrained palette, shadowed space and poised typography suggest a cover that is contemplative and assured, with a trace of mystery rather than overt drama.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
