Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a photograph of a choir on a stage with a large, sweeping gold-coloured emblem and several lines of lettering. The choir fills the lower half, arranged in tightly packed rows across the width. Most members wear white jackets or shirts with dark trousers; a woman in a long, vivid red dress stands alone at the front centre. The stage floor is dark and slightly reflective, with a curved edge or seam visible near the bottom. Behind the group, a red glow fades upwards into a very dark, almost black background, giving the stage a theatrical setting.
At the upper left, a large oval form outlined in muted gold loops around a cursive word. Its long, fine strokes extend beyond the oval and overlap the dark field, while part of the design sits behind or alongside the choir's title lettering. The upper area is otherwise spacious and very dark, making the lettering and the gold lines stand out. The image is cropped close to the group, whose heads form an uneven line beneath the brighter red backdrop.
Across the top, yellow uppercase lettering reads “THE MORRISTON ORPHEUS CHOIR”. Directly below, in smaller pale lettering, is “CÔR ORPHEUS TREFORYS”. The large cursive inscription at upper left reads “Orpheus”; to its right, bold white capitals read “NELLA FANTASIA”. Beneath the title are smaller credits in white and yellow, including “Adriano Graziani, Natalya Romaniv & Andrew Rees”, “With Gyda”, “Musical Director Cyfarwyddwr Cerdd”, and “Joy Amman Davies”. The smaller lines are centred toward the right half of the cover. The lettering mixes clean, compact capitals with a flowing handwritten style, set against the dark background. The overall treatment is photographic, with graphic lettering and a decorative drawn emblem layered over the stage image.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the feel of a curtain-call image: the choir presents itself as a broad, unified body, while the red-dressed solo figure at the front draws the eye like a single note held out from the many. The red light behind them seems to lift the group from the blackness, yet the stage remains grounded and plainly visible beneath their feet.
The gold oval and calligraphic sweep lend the upper half an older, ceremonious air, almost like a hand-drawn seal or an inscription on a programme. That formality sits beside the directness of the group photograph. The result is poised between emblem and record, between an idealised flourish and the tangible faces and white jackets gathered onstage. The red dress becomes a vivid counterpoint: a small, concentrated patch of warmth against the choir's repeated pale clothing and the dark stage.
