A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square graphic is dominated by a large red dragon, drawn with a thick dark outline. Its head and long neck occupy the upper centre and middle of the image. The dragon faces left, with a pointed snout, a visible eye, swept-back horns or spines and a jagged ridge along its head. Its curved neck descends into the lower centre, where a crosshatched pattern marks the chest or underside. Broad, angular wings spread behind it: a grey, dark-edged wing shape crosses the upper left background, while a red wing with black ribs fills much of the right side. The dragon’s body and curled limbs overlap the lower part of the composition; the image cuts off the creature at the edges.

The background is a muted, uneven grey, with darker folds or broad strokes visible near the top. Patches of saturated green show at the lower left and along the bottom, behind the dragon. Red dominates, set off by the black outlines and the grey and green areas. The illustration is flat and graphic, with simple filled colour areas and irregular, hand-drawn contours. A narrow pale border is visible along the bottom edge.

Large white lettering reading “Hawlif yw” stretches across the upper half, partly in front of and overlapping the dragon. The letters are irregular and rounded, with a dark drop shadow that helps them stand out. Three lines of smaller white text are centred over the lower portion of the dragon: “Ni ellir rhoi pris ar fywyd!”, “You cannot put a price on life!” and “www.hawlif yw.co.uk” (the final web address appears as “www.hawlif yw.co.uk” in the image, with a small gap between “hawlif” and “yw”). The lines sit across the dragon’s body and the green background, with the English sentence extending nearly the full width.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The oversized lettering and bold red creature give the image the direct, handmade energy of a community notice or campaign poster. The dragon seems less like a distant emblem than a mascot pressed up against the viewer: its wings fill the frame, and its outlined head pushes into the space of the title. That closeness makes the design feel lively and a little unruly.

The layered red, grey and green shapes suggest a Welsh palette, while the paired Welsh and English slogan makes the message feel addressed across languages. Against the creature’s fantastical presence, the plain statement about the price of life is strikingly matter-of-fact. The result holds two tones at once: the dragon brings a playful, storybook charge, but the crowded composition and emphatic slogan give it the insistence of a public appeal.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
