Cwm Rhyd y Rhosyn
Cwm
Boxed set artwork for Cwm, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square, brightly coloured cartoon illustration fills the cover edge to edge. A huge smiling yellow sun dominates the upper centre, its round face marked with two small eyes, a long curved nose and a broad, toothy grin. Short, uneven rays ring its outline. Against the clear blue sky, a rainbow enters from the left edge and curves down towards a patchwork village and garden. Small white cloud shapes, some with expressive faces, cluster beside it.
The lower half is a crowded landscape of green fields, angular rows of crops, flowers and tiny houses. A blue-and-white house and a taller pink house sit near the middle, surrounded by striped and chequered roofs, fences and bright plantings. At the lower right, a blue pond or stream holds a large white swan with a curved neck and several small yellow duck-like birds. Flowers, including tall purple clustered blooms, frame the right edge; a small purple flying shape, possibly a stylised bird, appears above them. The scene is packed with overlapping details, with no enclosing border or broad areas of empty space beyond the sky.
The palette is vivid and flat: saturated blue for sky and water, strong yellow for the sun and birds, and contrasting greens, pinks, purples, reds and white throughout the landscape. Dark, irregular outlines and hand-drawn hatching define the forms. The illustration has a loose, playful quality, with slightly wobbly contours and simplified shapes rather than realistic depth or lighting.
White Welsh lettering sits across the top of the sky. The largest line, in bold, narrow uppercase letters, reads “CWM- RHYD-Y-RHOSYN”; beneath it, smaller pale lettering reads “Dafydd Iwan ac Edward”. A further short verse in smaller white type is aligned at the upper right below the names; it is legible only in part at this size.
What the image evokes.
The cover feels like a picture-book world in which the landscape has been drawn by a lively hand and populated with things that seem to have their own expressions. The sun is both the central character and a kind of bright stage light, while the rainbow and busy garden make the lower half feel like a miniature celebration. Its cheerful abundance is almost unruly: houses, flowers, crops and birds press together until the scenery becomes a patterned field of little discoveries.
There is a childlike directness in the simple shapes and emphatic outlines, but the crowded composition gives it the pleasure of lingering over a finely filled-in page. The rainbow, smiling clouds and exaggerated sun suggest familiar nursery imagery, while the vivid, irregular lettering and colour make the scene feel more personal than polished. The water and swan offer a quieter pocket within the bustle; the sun's enormous face, meanwhile, is so prominent that the scene can read as both welcoming and slightly surreal.
