Mi Ganaf Gan
Dafydd Iwan ac Edward
Album artwork for Dafydd Iwan ac Edward, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover with a deep navy-blue background, slightly brighter towards the centre and upper right. Three lines of white and yellow lettering sit around an oversized, illustrated “101” that fills most of the image. The title “MI GANAF GÂN” is centred near the top in large white serif capitals, with quotation marks. Directly beneath it, a smaller line of yellow capitals reads “101 O GANEUON I’R PLANT”. Along the bottom edge, a white serif line reads “101 WELSH SONGS FOR CHILDREN”.
The huge numerals dominate the centre and lower portion. They are blocky, irregularly shaped and outlined in white, with dark offset edges that give them a raised, cut-out appearance. The left-hand “1” is red, with a green inset face on its upright and a short dark-blue segment along its upper-left edge. The broad central “0” is bright blue with a white inner border; its oval opening reveals the dark background. A curved green shape with a white outline sits inside the opening, echoing the zero’s contours. The right-hand “1” is magenta, with a green patch near its upper-left corner and a blue section at the foot. The numerals overlap slightly and are tilted or curved, so their edges form a lively, uneven silhouette rather than a straight line. The artwork is graphic and brightly coloured, with crisp outlines and layered shapes; no figures or recognisable scenery are shown.
What the image evokes.
The giant, brightly coloured numerals have the exuberant, physical presence of oversized playthings. Their thick outlines and slightly unruly angles suggest letters and numbers cut from coloured card and layered by hand, though the finish is clean and sharply defined. The central blue zero becomes a frame within the frame: its dark opening and curved green insert briefly draw the eye inward before the red and magenta ones pull it back towards the sides.
There is a pleasing push and pull between order and play. The title and two supporting lines are centred and carefully spaced, while the numerals seem to wobble and crowd together beneath them. The restrained navy field makes the primary colours feel vivid, almost luminous, and gives the design the cheerful clarity of a classroom display or a brightly painted sign. At the same time, the deep background lends the composition a little theatricality: the numbers appear to step forward into a pool of light, ready to be read aloud.
