Take Me Home
Cwmbach Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Cwmbach Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover in yellow, cream and deep blue, with a grainy, stippled surface across both the image and its background. The scene is arranged like a poster: large lettering occupies the upper left, while a dark, statue-like human figure rises on a tall plinth at the right. Behind and below the title, a low hillside settlement stretches across the left and centre, its clustered buildings partly obscured by the coarse, mottled treatment.
The figure stands in a broad, uplifted pose, one arm raised above the head and the other extended towards the right edge. Its clothing and features are indistinct, rendered in broken blue marks against the pale yellow sky. The figure is set on a substantial rectangular pedestal that fills much of the lower-right corner; its top edge appears to slope slightly in perspective, and its front face is shaded dark blue. In the lower left, a small quartered shield or crest contains tiny contrasting shapes and colours. Beside it is a short block of narrow blue lettering.
The title, “Take Me Home”, is set in tall, condensed white letters near the top left, with a fine dark outline or shadow that helps it stand out against the yellow ground. Directly underneath, “CWMBACH MALE CHOIR” appears in smaller dark-blue capitals, followed by “CÔR MEIBION CWMBACH” in a lighter, narrower line. The lettering is aligned to the left and layered over open sky rather than placed in a separate panel. The yellow field varies from brighter lemon tones to muted cream, while deep blue defines the statue, landscape, lettering and parts of the crest. There is no distinct outer frame. The overall image has a deliberately aged, rough-edged appearance, although the precise technique cannot be determined from the image.
What the image evokes.
The raised figure reads at once as a public monument and as a person caught in an expansive gesture. Its scale and position give it a ceremonial air, yet the broken, almost dusty blue marks keep it from feeling solid or imposing in a straightforward way. It seems to emerge from the same weathered surface as the hillside and buildings, as though the scene has been recalled from an old print or seen through a veil of time.
The composition balances two kinds of elevation: the figure stands high on its plinth at the right, while the title climbs vertically through the sky at the left. Between them, the low band of houses and landscape anchors the image in a lived-in place. The bright yellow ground brings warmth and a faint sense of radiance, but the dark, rough silhouettes lend the scene a melancholy undertone. The result can feel both commemorative and intimate, like a civic image softened by memory.
