Can O Gymru / A Souvenir Of Wales In Song
Rhos Male Choir
Album artwork for Rhos Male Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a dark map-like background, a large red dragon-shaped graphic and three rectangular photographs. The background is deep blue-green, with thin pale outlines suggesting the coast and boundaries of Wales. A few small map labels are visible but too indistinct to read confidently.
The red graphic fills much of the centre and right side. Its angular, curling forms have pale grey-blue edging and a soft light outline that separates them from the dark map. It is partly obscured by the photographs and cropped by the right and lower edges. The upper photograph, near the top right, shows a rugged green-grey landscape beneath a pale sky. Below it, a wider photograph shows a harbour or waterfront with boats, buildings and a hillside behind. The lowest photograph, also wide, shows a stone castle beside water, with its reflection visible in the foreground. Each image has a narrow dark border; their edges align roughly in a vertical stack, with the middle and lower images extending farther left than the top one.
Large pale yellow-green lettering across the top reads “Cân o Gymru” in a high-contrast serif style, with the circumflex clearly visible. Beneath it, aligned towards the right, the smaller white line “A Souvenir of Wales in Song” sits over the landscape photograph. Two lines of yellow-green text below read “CADEAU DU PAYS DE GALLES” and “EIN GESCHENK AUS WALES”. On the left, two compact lists in small white sans-serif type are headed in yellow-green italics: “Artists include” and “Songs include”. The artist names run down the upper left, while the song titles continue below. Their alignment and scale make them secondary to the large title, but they remain legible against the dark background. The cover has a layered, collage-like appearance, mixing photographs with graphic illustration and map outlines.
What the image evokes.
The cover brings together the feel of a map, a travel keepsake and a musical programme. Its stacked views of landscape, harbour and castle resemble small windows in a guidebook, while the multilingual subtitle gives the design the air of a souvenir intended to travel beyond its place of origin. The lists at the left suggest a printed track or performer insert, set directly onto the map rather than placed in a separate panel.
The red dragon-like form lends the composition a vivid, almost heraldic energy. It seems to surge behind the photographs, though the cropping and overlays leave its exact shape partly open to interpretation. Against the quiet, fine-lined map and photographic scenery, its bright red curves create a lively tension: part emblem, part ornamental flourish. The result feels both informative and theatrical, as if the landscape were being presented through a mixture of travel imagery and stage scenery.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
