Ar Yr Awyr (On Air)
Bryn Terfel & Rhys Meirion
Album artwork for Bryn Terfel & Rhys Meirion, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover combines an aerial photograph of a town with a large red helicopter in the foreground and bold, layered lettering. The helicopter fills much of the lower-left and centre: its nose points towards the right, its tail extends off to the left, and its main rotor stretches across the rooftops. The aircraft is seen from above at a slight angle, with dark cockpit windows, white markings and a visible tail rotor. A broad red translucent panel covers the right side of the image, overlaying part of the town and the helicopter’s rotor.
Below, tightly packed pale buildings and streets spread across the lower half of the cover. A green sports pitch and patches of trees are visible among them. The view recedes towards a hazy band of hills and a pale, muted sky at the top. Across the photograph, broad curved bands of yellow and green form a loose circular sweep: one arcs down from the upper right and another crosses the lower part of the scene. The photograph has a busy, compressed appearance, with the bright aircraft standing out sharply against the smaller, varied buildings.
The title occupies most of the upper-left area. “AR YR AWYR” appears in large, tightly spaced white capitals with dark shadowing; below it, “ON AIR” is even larger, in yellow-green capitals with a worn, mottled appearance. Smaller lettering sits at the top right, over the sky, while a second small title in yellow-green is placed below it over the curved bands. The right-hand red panel carries a vertical list of names in white bold capitals. The mixed Welsh and English wording, two-part title and names are integrated directly with the photograph. The image is edge-to-edge, without a separate border. The overall treatment is photographic, with prominent coloured overlays, curved graphic bands and strongly contrasting display type.
What the image evokes.
The cover’s crowded layers give it the feel of a place seen in a single urgent sweep: rooftops, roads and a helicopter are packed together, while the rotor seems to reach out across the scene. The aircraft’s vivid red makes it the immediate focus, but the red panel of names on the right echoes its colour and turns the list into another large block in the composition.
The sweeping green and yellow bands suggest a route, orbit or signal moving across the town. They add a sense of motion to an otherwise fixed aerial view, though their broad, decorative curves also compete with the tightly detailed photograph. The oversized, shadowed lettering has the emphatic quality of a public notice or event poster, set against the more intricate texture of the buildings. The pairing of Welsh and English phrases gives the cover a bilingual presence, while the juxtaposition of a working aircraft, a townscape and a long list of names makes the image feel both local and collective. Its bright colours and dense arrangement are energetic, with a slight tension between the cover’s graphic sweep and the carefully observed detail below.
