A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square cover with a mostly white background, centred on a hand-drawn arrangement of nine small, roughly square panels in a three-by-three grid. The panels have uneven black outlines and are filled with loose strokes of red, orange, yellow, and occasional blue-grey. Their interiors suggest abstracted rooms, shelves, windows, or blocks of colour, but the forms are sketchy and not consistently recognisable. Large black letters occupy the lower part of each panel, read left to right and top to bottom as “M”, “D”, “A”, “TH”, “L”, “U”, “D”, “E”, “G”. Together they spell “MDA THL UDEG” only as separate panel lettering; the grouping is visually ambiguous.

Above and partly overlapping the top-left of the grid is a Welsh title, “Ysgol Llanneathwy”, in large lettering. “Ysgol” appears in red and orange near the top; “Llanneathwy” is predominantly ochre and yellow beneath it. A prominent red calligraphic flourish, shaped like an oversized looping initial or ribbon, sweeps down the left side of the title and curls towards the top-left panel. The title is much larger than the grid lettering and forms the main focal point.

The drawing is loose and lively, with visible wavering outlines, cross-hatching and layered coloured strokes. The nine panels are aligned approximately but vary in size and internal arrangement, with narrow white gaps between them. The grid fills most of the central and lower area, leaving a broad white margin around it, especially at the sides and bottom. The colours are warm and somewhat translucent in places, with black sketch lines providing contrast. There is no visible photographic depth, cast shadow, or enclosing border.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover has the air of a hand-made school display: the tidy three-by-three arrangement is repeatedly unsettled by energetic, imperfect lines, as if each little square had been drawn and coloured in by hand. The large looping red flourish lends the title a celebratory, almost sign-painted quality, while the panels below feel like a set of miniature scenes or compartments. Their repeated black letters give the grid a rhythm, though the varied marks resist settling into a single clear pattern.

Warm reds, yellows and oranges bring to mind coloured pencils or wax crayons on paper, and the dark outlines have the immediacy of a quick sketch. The restrained white ground keeps the crowded lettering and panels from feeling heavy. There is a pleasing tension between the orderly grid and the unruly strokes within it: a sense of play and organisation sharing the same page, with the title curling across the top like a flourish added at the last moment.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
