Inside the image.
A square cover combines a dark indigo illustrated background with a rectangular concert photograph centred across the lower middle. The background is filled by a large, close-cropped line drawing of a face in profile, facing right. Its forehead and brow occupy much of the upper half, while the nose, lips and chin emerge along the right edge. Dense, irregular dark strokes describe the hair or headdress and facial contours against the blue ground; parts of the drawing are obscured by the lettering and photograph.
Across the upper portion, large loose blue script-like lettering spells “goreuon”, with some letters blending into the illustrated lines. Beneath it, the name “JIM O’ROURKE” appears in narrow, tall white capitals, centred above the photograph. The photograph shows a band performing on a dark stage: a drum kit is raised at the rear near the centre, with musicians spaced across the stage and a seated or crouched player near the front centre. A bright yellow-green beam falls behind the central performers, while cooler blue and white light picks out figures and equipment at either side. The stage floor and audience-side edge are very dark, with a few pale highlights and indistinct forms near the bottom.
Small yellow text sits over the photograph near its lower edge, reading “YN CYNNWYS CYFRANADAU / FEATURING”; below it, larger orange-gold capitals read “DONAL LUNNY & DAVY SPILLANE”. The photograph and lettering form a compact central band, leaving the illustrated blue face visible above, below and especially at the right. The overall treatment mixes a grainy live-performance photograph with a flat, hand-drawn portrait and layered lettering. The palette is dominated by deep blue and black, contrasted with the photograph’s greenish spotlight and the warm gold-orange text.
What the image evokes.
The cover feels like two kinds of performance held together in one frame: the immediate, crowded darkness of a stage and the much larger, watchful face behind it. The portrait’s scale makes it seem almost like a mask, mural or carved presence, while the band photograph has the fleeting quality of a moment caught under changing lights. Their overlap gives the image a dreamlike depth, as if the concert were taking place in front of—or inside—the face.
The blue drawing lends the design an old, folkloric or archival air, though its rough lines remain lively rather than solemn. Against it, the narrow white name and bright lettering have a direct, poster-like clarity. The yellow-green beam cuts through the darkness like a narrow opening, and the orange-gold inscription warms the lower edge. There is a pleasing tension between the intimate human scale of the musicians and the monumental profile that fills the cover; neither quite dominates, and the result feels at once theatrical, mysterious and handmade.
