Brenda Edwards
Album artwork for Brenda Edwards, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a central colour portrait with a dark, purplish seascape. A person is shown from the upper chest upwards, facing the viewer. Their dark hair falls in a tousled fringe, and large black sunglasses cover their eyes. They wear a vivid red top with a V-shaped neckline and white floral embroidery or printed motifs across the shoulders and chest. The portrait fills most of the centre, with the head near the upper edge and the torso fading into the darker lower area.
Behind the figure, horizontal bands of deep violet and muted magenta suggest a sea beneath a dusky sky. A faint horizon crosses the image around the level of the upper part of the portrait. Below it, rippling lines and pale reflections mark the water, most visibly along the lower left and right. A darker, roughly rectangular portrait area sits over this background; its edges are soft and partly lost in shadow, giving the impression of layered images. The palette shifts from burgundy and pink at the top to aubergine, wine red and near-black below. The face and shirt are brighter than the surrounding scene, though the portrait itself has subdued, reddish lighting and soft shadows.
Across the top, the name “BRENDA EDWARDS” appears in widely spaced, pale uppercase serif letters, centred and almost spanning the width. Near the bottom, the title “môr o hen atgofion” is set in smaller, pale lowercase serif lettering, centred over a dark band. The text is cleanly legible against the background. The artwork has a photographic appearance, with the portrait visibly layered against a stylised, low-contrast seascape; there is no separate border.
What the image evokes.
The portrait seems to surface from the sea behind it: the dark rectangle around the figure gives the image a faintly spectral quality, while the water remains visible at either side and beneath the red shirt. The sunglasses create a firm, opaque band across the face, making the expression difficult to read. That concealment sits alongside the direct, frontal pose and gives the cover a mixture of presence and reserve.
The red garment glows against the dusky purples, lending the figure warmth and weight. Its embroidered-looking flowers soften the otherwise dark, somewhat stark image. The sea and the soft magenta sky suggest a remembered evening or a scene seen through tinted glass, though the portrait's directness keeps it from becoming purely dreamlike. The result holds two moods together: intimate and personal at its centre, spacious and melancholy around its edges.
