A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

The cover is divided into a large blue upper panel and a smaller white strip along the bottom. In the upper panel, a photographic portrait of a man fills much of the left side, cropped at the waist and cut off by the left and lower edges. He wears a dark jacket over a pale shirt and is turned slightly towards the right, with his mouth open and his face angled upwards. Bright highlights fall across his face and collar, while much of his jacket remains in deep shadow.

Behind him is a saturated blue sky with layered clouds, ranging from dark navy and teal to brighter turquoise. The cloud forms create a soft, atmospheric backdrop without a visible horizon. On the right, large white lettering reads “Hafan – Gobaith”; the first word is set above the larger second word in elegant, high-contrast italic lettering. Beneath it, a small line reads “Another Day 2003”. Lower down, a prominent white handwritten-style signature crosses the blue field, with a much smaller two-line inscription, “a cheffillion / and friends”, to its right. The portrait and lettering overlap the open sky, with the title occupying the clear space to the right of the figure.

The white bottom strip is separated from the upper image by a straight horizontal edge. At the left is a small red, widely spaced line reading “APÊL 2003 APPEAL”, above a compact cluster of coloured charity and broadcaster marks, including a red-and-green “TY HAFAN” logo. A small crest-like red and green mark sits beside it. At the far right is a large red “S4C” logo with a small blue accent. The overall treatment combines a dramatic studio-style portrait, a cloudscape background and contrasting formal, script-like and logo lettering.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The portrait against the immense blue sky gives the image a public, almost ceremonial air. The man's lifted face and open mouth suggest a moment of address or song, though the still image leaves the precise expression ambiguous: it might read as fervent, joyful or simply caught mid-phrase. His dark clothing anchors the left side, while the title and bright clouds make the right feel more open and weightless.

The crisp white title has a poised, literary quality, set against clouds that could belong to a stage backdrop or a broad, imagined sky. The handwritten signature introduces a more personal note, as if the formal title has been followed by a gesture of dedication. Below, the small appeal marks and broadcast logo bring the image back to practical, institutional ground. Together, the two zones hold a gentle tension between intimate portraiture and public appeal, between an expansive, almost dreamlike upper scene and the neat white strip beneath it.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.

Lettering & observation notes
  • Hafan – Gobaith — Upper right
  • Another Day 2003 — Below the title, upper right

  • APÊL 2003 APPEAL — Bottom left
  • TY HAFAN — In the coloured logo cluster at bottom left
  • S4C — Bottom right
  • The handwritten signature is visible but not confidently legible, so it is not transcribed.
  • Some small lettering within the bottom-left logos is too small to read clearly.
