Inside the image.
The square cover combines a monochrome portrait with large lettering. A man is shown from the chest upwards on the right, his shoulders angled slightly towards the viewer’s left while he looks directly ahead. His dark, wavy hair is brushed back from his forehead; his face is softly lit, with defined brows, a straight nose and a neutral, closed-mouth expression. He wears a dark jacket, a pale high-collared shirt and a dark tie patterned with small light dots. The portrait is cropped at the top and right edges, and his clothing fades into the dark lower area of the image.
The portrait sits against a muted dusty-rose and brown background. Its surface has fine horizontal lines and a softly mottled, grainy appearance. The left side is darker and less distinct, leaving room for the text, while a pale area behind the man’s head separates his face from the background. The image is tightly framed, with no visible border or separate margin.
The lettering occupies much of the left half, partly overlapping the portrait’s lower-left edge. Near the upper left, “EMYNAU” appears in small, widely spaced white capitals. Below it, “Caradog” and “Roberts” are set on two lines in much larger orange italic serif lettering, with a dark shadow or outline that helps the words stand out. A thin dark horizontal rule runs beneath “Roberts”. Lower down, “CANTORION” and “CYNWRIG” appear on two centred lines in white serif capitals; the second line is narrower. The text and portrait share the same subdued pink-brown tonal treatment, with the orange name providing the strongest colour accent.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the reserved formality of a posed studio portrait, yet the generous, slanting name gives it a more personal, almost theatrical presence. The man’s steady gaze anchors the right side, while the orange lettering advances from the left like a title on a stage curtain. The contrast between the still face and the emphatic script makes the design feel both commemorative and immediate.
Its softened rose-brown palette and fine horizontal surface marks suggest the look of an aged photograph viewed through a light veil. That impression is tempered by the crisp, high-contrast typography, which gives the image the composed quality of a printed programme or portrait card. The result feels intimate but ceremonial: a private likeness presented with the clarity and dignity of a public name.
