A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square album cover centres on a colour portrait of a smiling woman, framed from the upper chest upwards. She faces the viewer, with her head near the middle of the image and her shoulders angled slightly. She has short, voluminous dark hair with a fringe, bright earrings, and a black jacket with broad lapels over a low-cut dark top. The portrait has a soft, slightly hazy photographic appearance. Its background is a muted mauve-grey, and a thin pale rectangular border encloses it. The lower edge of the portrait continues beyond the bottom of the cover.

Around the photograph is a dark burgundy and plum field with a mottled, cloudy pattern. It forms a broad margin, especially at the sides, and a deeper band above the portrait for the lettering. The palette is mostly dark wine red, black and muted purple, set against the lighter skin, pale background and white lettering. The woman’s face is softly lit, with gentle shadows around her hair and jacket; the surrounding field remains much darker.

Three centred lines of text sit above the portrait. The small top line, “The very best of”, is in a pale italic serif style. Below it, “MARGARET WILLIAMS” appears much larger in uppercase, narrow serif capitals. The third line, “Y Goreuon”, is smaller and italic. The text is centred over the image, with the large name occupying most of the width of the upper band. The design combines a straightforward studio-style portrait with a textured, dark ornamental-looking surround.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover has the feel of a formal keepsake portrait: the face is presented directly and warmly, while the dark, marbled surround lends the image a more ceremonial frame. The pale rectangle gives the photograph the quality of a mounted print set into a richly coloured album sleeve.

There is a gentle tension between intimacy and formality. Her smile and direct gaze invite a personal response, but the carefully centred title and name, along with the border and deep plum field, make the arrangement feel composed and commemorative. The dark hair and jacket merge into the surrounding shadows at the lower corners, leaving the face as the clearest point of light. The result is restrained and nostalgic, with a hint of old-fashioned portraiture without pinning it to a particular period or design tradition.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
