Alleluia
Gwawr Edwards
Album artwork for Gwawr Edwards, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square photographic cover centres on a fair-skinned blonde woman, shown from the upper chest upwards. Her face sits slightly above the middle of the image and turns towards the viewer’s left; she looks off-frame in that direction with a slight, closed-mouth smile. Her long, loose hair falls over both shoulders and spreads across much of the lower half of the portrait. A dangling teardrop-shaped earring is visible on the viewer’s right. Her pale clothing and shoulders blend into a bright white fade along the bottom edge.
The woman fills most of the frame, with the top of her hair close to the upper edge and her shoulders extending beyond the lower corners. Behind her, a softly blurred, dark green outdoor setting provides a shaded backdrop. A lighter, warm-toned horizontal area is visible in the lower-left background, though its nature is indistinct. The contrast between the deep greens and the bright light on her face and hair draws attention to her expression. Her hair has golden highlights, and the light is especially strong across the lower-left side of the portrait, where it merges into the white overlay.
Across the lower portion, overlapping her hair and the white fade, the word “alleluia” appears in large, thin, pale beige lowercase letters. The delicate lettering is widely spaced and partly crossed by vertical strokes that extend above the letter height. Beneath it, “GWAWR EDWARDS” is centred in smaller, widely tracked, muted rose-red capitals. The lettering remains legible against the bright lower area. No border is visible. The image combines a softly lit portrait photograph with a graduated white area carrying the typography.
What the image evokes.
The cover sets a polished, almost luminous portrait against a background that stays indistinct and shadowed. The woman’s sideways glance gives the image a quiet sense of attention, as though she has noticed something just outside the frame. Her slight smile keeps that moment gentle rather than dramatic.
The white fade and fine lettering lend the lower half an airy, restrained quality, while the larger word stretches across the portrait like a light inscription. The rose-red artist name adds a small, warmer note. Together, these choices may recall the clean, romantic presentation of a formal portrait or a keepsake photograph, though the dark greenery leaves a trace of natural setting around it. There is a mild tension between the intimacy of the close framing and the outward direction of her gaze: the viewer is near to her, yet her attention belongs elsewhere.
