A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square album cover combines a photograph of a wooden boardwalk crossing a stark, open landscape with large lettering laid over the scene. The walkway begins broad at the bottom centre and narrows towards a point near the upper middle, drawing the eye into the distance. Weathered grey-brown planks run across it in close rows, with darker gaps and patches of greenish growth. Railings line both sides: the left-hand rail is prominent as it angles from the lower-left area towards the distant centre, while the right-hand side has a lower, broken-looking stretch of timber near the bottom edge.

Beyond the boardwalk, low, rough ground spreads across the image. On the left it appears brown and scrubby; on the right it is paler, grey and sparse, with narrow dark channels or shallow water beside the path. A low, uneven horizon crosses the upper third, with dark land rising slightly at the right. Above it, the sky is blue and pale cyan, crossed by soft, sweeping bands of cloud. The light is cool and subdued, with brighter blue-white areas in the sky and muted earth tones below. A darkened, blended treatment around the edges and over parts of the lower image gives the photograph a layered, slightly hazy appearance.

Across the upper half, the word “HENNESSEYS” appears in very large, narrow, high-contrast serif capitals. The letters are pale grey-white and extend almost from edge to edge, overlaying the sky and distant landscape; the boardwalk and scenery remain visible through or behind parts of the lettering. A second, much smaller line near the bottom reads “Y CANEUON CYNNAR • THE EARLY SONGS” in bold, pale capitals, aligned towards the left and spanning most of the width. Just above it, a large grey cursive inscription reads “ar lan y môr”; its flowing strokes stretch across the lower portion of the boardwalk and are partly blended into the photograph. No border is visible.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The boardwalk makes the landscape feel traversable without making it feel settled. Its straight, narrowing route offers a clear direction, yet the empty, low-lying ground on either side remains exposed and difficult to read. The path seems to hover between firm passage and watery margins, an impression reinforced by the dark channels and the uneven, damp-looking planks.

The oversized, pale name has a formal, almost monumental presence, while the handwritten Welsh phrase below it feels intimate and loosely made. Their contrast gives the cover two registers at once: the crisp authority of tall display lettering and the softness of a personal note written across a remembered view. The image’s cool blues and worn browns lend it a wistful stillness. It might suggest a coastal walk under shifting weather, but the scene also has an uncanny, dreamlike quality: the boardwalk appears to continue into a hazy distance, and the translucent layering of type and landscape makes the words seem suspended within the view rather than simply placed on top of it.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
