Y Llais O Baradwys / The Voice From Paradise
Lucy Kelly
Album artwork for Lucy Kelly, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover is dominated by a close-up colour photograph of a smiling young girl. Her face fills the centre and right side, turned slightly towards the viewer’s left as she looks upwards in that direction. She has pale skin, light eyes and long, wavy brown hair that falls down both sides of her face and continues beyond the lower edge. Her open smile shows her teeth. A small purple flower is tucked into her hair near the upper-right corner.
The portrait is brightly lit, with soft highlights across her forehead and cheeks and a pale, nearly white background. At the far left, a narrow blue vertical line runs down from the top edge. Below it, a pale grey-green abstract shape curves in from the left and lower edges, crossed by thin, muted green lines. The left portion of the photograph is washed with light, while the girl's hair creates a darker frame around her face on the right. The crop is tight: the top of her hair and the lower ends of her locks are cut off by the cover edges.
The lettering is grouped in the open space on the left. “LUCY” appears near the upper-left in very large, thin, dark blue capital letters, with “KELLY” directly beneath in smaller, bold turquoise capitals. Lower down, two narrow lines of green capitals are set vertically, reading “Y LLAIS O BARADWYS” and “THE VOICE FROM PARADISE”. The vertical titles sit over the pale abstract area beside the girl’s hair. The design combines a naturalistic photograph with simple graphic shapes and clean, prominently coloured type.
What the image evokes.
The upward tilt of the girl’s gaze gives the portrait a sense of lightness, as though her attention has just been caught by something beyond the frame. Her broad, unguarded smile makes the image feel intimate and immediate; the closeness of the crop brings the viewer into that moment rather than presenting her as a distant figure. The little flower in her hair adds a delicate, almost garden-like note.
The cover’s bright whites and softened greens suggest an airy, sunlit atmosphere, while the deep blue name and vivid turquoise line provide crisp accents against the pale ground. The vertical title lends a subtle counterweight to the broad curves of hair and face. Its arrangement has the tidy clarity of a portrait set alongside a title panel, though the graphic shapes blend into the photograph’s brightness rather than forming a hard-edged division. The overall impression is tender and open, with a slight tension between the formal, orderly lettering and the spontaneous expression at the centre.
