A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square album cover combines a softly faded portrait photograph on the left with a broad, mottled beige field on the right. A woman sits in a pale upholstered armchair, shown from about the knees upwards and turned slightly towards the viewer. She has short, voluminous dark hair and wears a dark jacket over a white collared blouse. Her hands rest together across her lap. The chair’s rounded back, patterned with pale greenish floral shapes, shows behind her left shoulder. At the lower left, dried flowers and grasses rise in front of the chair and partly obscure its base; a small dark floral-looking object sits near the bottom edge.

The portrait occupies roughly the left half of the cover, though its edges dissolve into the surrounding design rather than forming a sharp rectangular frame. A pale vertical glow and shadowy grey-green area sit behind the chair and figure. The right half is mostly open, filled with warm ochre, tan and muted gold clouding that resembles aged or softly brushed paper. The portrait and background meet in a blurred, irregular transition. The image has subdued, softened colours and a slightly hazy photographic appearance, with no separate border.

Large decorative lettering overlaps the middle-right area, extending slightly across the portrait’s edge. It reads “doreen Lewis” in lowercase and capitalised forms as shown: “doreen” above “Lewis”. The letters are blue-grey with pale outlines and a dark offset shadow, in a bold, rounded serif style. Beneath them, smaller cream lettering reads “ha’ bach” and “mihangel” on two lines, aligned towards the right. The typography stands out against the sandy background while partially covering the portrait’s right side.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover has the feeling of a keepsake portrait set into a softened, golden page. Its softened edges and faded palette lend the photograph a memory-like quality, while the open expanse to the right gives the sitter’s image room to linger rather than enclosing it in a conventional frame.

There is a gentle contrast between the formal, composed pose and the loose, almost clouded background. The armchair and dried stems suggest a domestic interior, but the background’s uneven gold wash makes the setting feel slightly removed from ordinary time, like a portrait recalled years later. The title lettering brings a more assertive, theatrical note: its heavy outlined forms sit across the quiet image like a nameplate, adding a touch of old-fashioned showmanship without dispelling the cover’s intimacy.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
