A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square album cover with a muted salmon-pink ground and a narrow dotted white border set in from the edges. Two rectangular portraits sit side by side across the middle, separated by a slim strip of the pink background. The left portrait is a black-and-white photograph of a middle-aged man in formal evening dress, shown from the chest up against a pale backdrop. His dark hair is swept back; he wears a dark jacket, white shirt and large white bow tie, and turns slightly towards the viewer with a mild smile. The portrait on the right is a colour photograph of a younger-looking man, also in formal dress, against a nearly black background. He wears a black jacket, white shirt and black bow tie. His short brown hair is lit warmly, and he looks towards the left side of the cover with a broad, open smile. Both portraits are closely cropped, with the faces prominent; the right image is marginally wider and reaches slightly lower.

At the top, the large word “CARTREF” is centred in dark red serif capitals, with a fine horizontal rule running through or just beneath the lettering. A smaller line of black serif capitals below reads “ARTHUR DAVIES, ALED EDWARDS”. Beneath the portraits, a centred line in bold black capitals reads “A CHÔR MEIBION LLANELLI”, followed by the smaller parenthetical line “(Gethin Hughes – Piano)”. The typography is arranged in stacked bands above and below the photographs, leaving a slim pink margin around the dotted frame. The overall design is flat and symmetrical, though the contrasting monochrome and colour portraits give the two halves distinct visual weight. The photographs are the only realistic elements; the surrounding field and border are graphic. The pink background appears slightly mottled, while the portraits have smooth photographic tonal transitions and strong contrast, especially the dark field behind the man on the right.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The paired portraits give the cover the feeling of a formal presentation: two people placed side by side, each offered an individual frame, as if in a printed programme or commemorative booklet. Their expressions loosen that formality. The man on the left meets the viewer with a restrained, composed smile; the man on the right seems caught in a more spontaneous moment, his bright face emerging from the dark ground. The contrast between the black-and-white image and the warmly coloured one can suggest two different photographic moments, without making their relationship entirely clear.

The salmon field softens the otherwise ceremonial arrangement. Its warmth sits somewhere between a stage curtain and the faded colour of an old printed card, while the dotted border gives the cover a neat, handmade-looking finish. The dark red title feels substantial against that ground, and the compact rows of lettering lend the design an almost heraldic order. Yet the portraits keep it personal: the composition balances official polish with the intimacy of two distinct expressions.
