A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square cover is filled with a warm, mottled ochre and orange ground. A broad, dark reddish-brown Celtic-style interlace forms a rectangular frame around a small central landscape. The frame has thick, curling bands that weave over and under one another across the top and bottom; at the sides, the pattern becomes more upright and angular, with curled ends and pointed, leaf-like shapes. Small cream-coloured areas show through within parts of the design, and a narrow dark outline helps separate the interlace from the ground.

The framed landscape sits across the centre, in a horizontal rectangle. It shows a cluster of buildings among dark trees, with low hills or mountains behind them. The sky is pale and cloudy, with muted pink, grey and cream tones. The scene is rendered in soft, uneven brush-like marks, and its details are small compared with the surrounding frame. The edges of the landscape are irregularly blended into the orange ground rather than sharply boxed.

Large dark brown lettering runs along the top, reading “LLAWENYDD Y GÂN”, with a small diamond-like mark on either side. Along the bottom, a second line reads “Goreuon Côr Rhuthun a’r Cylch”. Both lines are centred and use tall, narrow, decorative serif letters. The upper line is larger and sits above the interlace; the lower line is smaller and set below it. The palette is predominantly orange, ochre and russet, offset by the deep brown pattern and lettering, while the central scene introduces subdued greens, greys, pinks and pale sky colours. The whole image has a painted, aged-paper appearance, with mottling and soft colour variation across the background.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The interlace gives the cover the feeling of a carved or illuminated border: it seems to knot itself around the landscape, making the little view feel held within an ornamental threshold. The curling forms are dense and restless, yet their repeated crossings create a steady rhythm. Against them, the village-like scene is quiet and distant, as if glimpsed through a window cut into the pattern.

The orange ground suggests warmth and old parchment, though its uneven colour also has the glow of late sunlight. The dark lettering and russet ornament lend the image a handcrafted, bookish character. There is a pleasing tension between the formal, almost ceremonial frame and the modest, hazy buildings at its centre: the border feels ancient and intricate, while the view feels local and lived-in. The result can evoke a decorated page or a painted sign, without settling into a single period or tradition.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
