A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square cover on a white ground combines three isolated instrument photographs with a portrait. Across the upper part, a black-framed harp stands at the left, its tall curved neck rising from the lower-left corner and its golden strings fanning down to a dark base. Near the centre is a small, upright, light-wood instrument with a rectangular body, rounded upper corners, a narrow opening through its middle, and dark fittings near the bottom. To its right, a brown violin stands vertically, with a dark fingerboard and pegs; a bow slants diagonally down across it and toward the lower right. The objects sit close together but do not overlap substantially, and their cut-out edges contrast with the plain background.

At upper right, a rectangular portrait occupies a pale green field. It shows an older-looking man from the shoulders up, turned slightly towards the left of the image and gazing upwards. He has short, light grey hair and a grey beard and moustache. The portrait is closely cropped at the right and lower edges of its green rectangle. The face is warmly lit, with yellow-green tones that echo the background; the surrounding instruments are more sharply contrasted against white. The overall effect is a flat collage with little sense of shared depth, rather than a continuous scene.

Black lettering runs across the top above the instruments: “Arfon Gwilym” in a large serif style, followed by the smaller italic Welsh phrase “a chyfeillion”. Below the objects, the title “Proc i’r Tân” stretches across the lower portion in very large, pale green italic serif lettering. Its thin strokes and long, sloping forms leave ample white space around and between the letters. The limited palette of white, black, honeyed wood, brown, and soft green gives the cover a light, uncluttered appearance. The image has no visible border.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The cover feels like a meeting between a musician’s portrait and a small display of instruments: each element is presented plainly, as if arranged for inspection, while the green-backed face brings a human presence into an otherwise object-centred composition. The harp’s dramatic sweep and the violin’s diagonal bow supply the strongest movement; the little wooden instrument between them acts as a quiet, almost architectural pause.

The large, pale green title seems to float beneath the collage. Its delicate, flowing letters soften the hard edges of the photographic cut-outs and lend the arrangement a wistful, handmade quality. The white space keeps the objects from becoming crowded, but their close grouping suggests companionship. The portrait’s upward gaze introduces a different kind of openness, making the whole image feel both practical and gently reflective—like a modest musical keepsake assembled from a face, a few instruments, and a name.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
