Un Mondo A Parte
Annette Bryn Parri
Album artwork for Annette Bryn Parri, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover in pale blue, slate blue and white. A large, softly blended portrait of a woman fills the right side and much of the centre. Her face is turned towards the viewer, with one eye near the upper centre and the other close to the right edge; her nose and slight smile sit lower down. Her light, wavy hair spreads across the upper-right corner and blends into the background. The portrait is cropped by the top, right and bottom edges, and its translucent, washed-out treatment allows other imagery to show through it.
A pale map of Europe occupies the left half, extending behind the face. Its coastlines and country outlines are faintly visible beneath a curved grid of latitude and longitude lines, which continues across the portrait and makes the cover resemble a globe or mapped surface. The map, grid and face overlap without hard cut-out edges. Soft blue shading gathers around the perimeter, while the central face and parts of the map are brighter; the overall contrast remains gentle and misty.
At the top, large white serif lettering reads “Un Mondo a Parte”, with the words set in title case and spaced across nearly the full width. Directly beneath it, “annette bryn parri” appears in smaller, widely spaced, black italic lower-case letters. Along the bottom edge, a small blue inscription at left reads “CASGLIAD O UNDAU PIANO”; a black dot separates it from the smaller dark text “A COLLECTION OF PIANO SOLOS”, which runs towards the lower-right corner. The lettering overlays the image, with the bottom line placed over the pale lower part of the portrait and map. There is no visible border. The cover has a photographic, softly dissolved appearance, combining the portrait with map imagery and a globe-like grid.
What the image evokes.
The face seems to hover over the map rather than sit in front of it, giving the image a dreamlike double exposure. The curved lines lend the flat map a sense of roundness, as though the world were being seen through a translucent lens. At the same time, the fine boundaries and place-shaped coastlines keep the image tied to geography; the globe-like sweep feels intimate because it is overlaid by such a close, direct gaze.
The cool blue palette suggests distance, quiet and recollection, while the woman's faint smile softens that reserve. Her eye contact brings a human warmth to an image that might otherwise feel like an atlas or an old classroom globe. The result sits between portrait and map, personal presence and broad expanse. The restrained serif title and airy lettering reinforce a reflective, almost literary mood, while the small bilingual line at the foot gives the otherwise spacious design a discreet, catalogue-like finish.
