Y Flwyddyn Dwy Fil
Dylan A Neil
Ep artwork for Dylan A Neil, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover in a warm, strongly unified yellow-orange palette shows two light-skinned men in a close photographic portrait. The older-looking man stands slightly behind on the left, angled towards the camera with a broad smile; the younger-looking man fills much of the lower-right foreground and looks straight out with a quieter expression. Their heads sit close together, with the nearer face larger and lower in the frame. Both wear dark collared clothing, partly visible against the amber-toned shadows. The left figure has pale, tousled hair; the right figure has short, dark hair.
The portrait fills the cover, with no visible border. The men emerge from a softly indistinct, mottled background in the same golden hue; the darkest area falls between and behind their heads, while the corners and upper background are pale yellow. The photograph is treated in a monochrome sepia-like tint, with bright highlights on faces and hair and deep orange-brown shadows. Fine facial details and clothing remain visible, though the image has a soft, aged-looking photographic appearance.
Large dark orange-brown lettering is centred across the top in two lines. The first reads “Dylan a Neil” in a bold, slanted serif style; beneath it, “Y Flwyddyn Dwy Fil” appears smaller in a similar italic serif. A small, pale cream caption is centred near the bottom over the men’s clothing, arranged across three lines: “5 cân wych gan y tad a'r mab o'r Felinheli” and “5 great country songs from the” / “father-and-son duo”. The lower lettering is much finer and lower in contrast than the title, and its first line is particularly difficult to make out against the photograph.
What the image evokes.
The close, shoulder-to-shoulder arrangement gives the cover the directness of a family portrait: the smiles and outward gazes make the two men feel present and approachable, as though they have paused together for the camera. The nearer face commands attention, while the second figure’s position just behind him creates a gentle sense of companionship rather than formal symmetry.
The amber wash lends the image a nostalgic warmth, like an old photograph kept in a sunlit room. Its golden light is inviting, but the shadow pooled between the figures adds weight and contrast. The prominent, sloping title has a theatrical flourish, while the small cream caption seems almost absorbed into the portrait. Together, the polished lettering and intimate photograph suggest a meeting of presentation and personal familiarity: a cover that feels both formally announced and quietly domestic.
