A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A compact cover design on a white field combines a piano keyboard, a dark musical backdrop and a tall gold plaque. The main image sits across the middle: a broad, rounded rectangle filled with a nearly black blue-purple surface patterned with faint musical staves, notes and small star-like points. A horizontal piano keyboard runs along its lower edge, with white keys and raised black keys shown in perspective. A red cloth is draped loosely over the keys near the centre, its folds catching brighter highlights. The keyboard and dark panel extend beyond the left edge of the cover image, while the panel’s right end is rounded. A narrow strip of white space remains below it.

At the left, overlapping the panel and keyboard, is a vertical rounded rectangle resembling a metallic gold plaque. Its surface shifts from dark olive-gold at the top to pale yellow and cream lower down, with a soft shadow around its edges. Decorative, fine line drawings of musical instruments or related classical motifs appear across its middle, though their forms are stylised and not all clearly identifiable. The plaque carries centred lettering in several sizes: small gold “THE” above the large white title “Welsh Gold”; below it, “COLLECTION” in dark capitals, followed by the smaller lines “A CELEBRATION / OF THE / CLASSICAL / PERFORMERS / OF WALES”. Near the bottom are three lines of smaller gold lettering: “DATHLU’R / GOREUON / O FYD / Y CLASURON / CYMREIG”. The plaque’s rounded corners and shaded edge give it a raised, label-like appearance.

Above the dark panel, “STARCLASSICS” is printed in large red capitals. The tall, narrow letterforms sit just to the right of the plaque and stand out against the otherwise plain white upper background. The design mixes a photographic-looking keyboard and fabric with a stylised, starry musical panel, decorative line work and prominent display lettering. The strongest contrasts are between the red cloth and near-black backdrop, and between the gold plaque and white ground.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The arrangement has the feel of a commemorative label mounted over a stage-like scene. The gold plaque, with its softened corners and layered lettering, suggests an inscription or award, while the keyboard beneath it anchors the design in a tangible object. The red fabric adds a theatrical note: it might suggest a curtain, a sash or simply a flourish of colour laid across the keys. Its folds draw the eye into the otherwise orderly horizontal rhythm of the piano.

The dark panel seems to open a second, more atmospheric space behind the instrument. Scattered points of light and faint notation evoke a night sky or a dimly lit concert hall, but the keyboard remains firmly in the foreground. The contrast between that cool, almost cosmic backdrop and the warm gold label gives the composition a mixture of ceremony and dreaminess. The oversized red word above introduces a sharper, more assertive note, as if a sign has been placed over a carefully assembled display. The result balances formal presentation with a small theatrical interruption: the cloth breaking the keys’ regular pattern.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
