Pererinion (Detholiad O Waith Joseph Parry An Anthology Of His Music)
Pendyrus Male Voice Choir
Album artwork for Pendyrus Male Voice Choir, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
The square cover is divided into two vertical panels. A broad photographic panel fills roughly the left two-thirds, while a narrow black panel runs down the right. In the photograph, a pale foamy shoreline cuts diagonally from near the top centre towards the lower right, separating olive-gold wet sand on the left from lighter, rippled water on the right. The view is close to the ground and angled along the water’s edge; no horizon or sky is visible.
Several marks and objects sit on the sand. Near the lower middle are two shallow impressions, one elongated and dark at the left and a smaller reddish-brown one to its right. Below them, a large dark, irregular patch of seaweed or debris lies near the bottom edge, with a few lighter pieces caught within it. The sand has a muted, grainy appearance, while the water is mottled with pale beige and white foam. The shoreline’s bright edge provides the strongest contrast in the image. The photograph is softly coloured in subdued khaki, ochre, cream and brown tones.
The right-hand panel has a plain black background and compact text arranged in groups. At the top, “CÔR MEIBION” appears in orange capitals above “PENDYRYDS” in larger pale grey capitals, followed by “MALE CHOIR” in orange. A blue line drawing of a harp entwined with a leafy branch occupies the middle. Near the bottom, orange text reads “Detholiad o Waith” and “JOSEPH PARRY”; underneath, blue text reads “An Anthology” and “of his music”.
Across the upper left of the photograph, the word “pererinion” is set in large, thin, lowercase white letters. The lettering stretches from the left edge towards the foamy shoreline and stands out clearly against the sand. The cover combines a naturalistic colour photograph with a sharply contrasting, typographic black strip and a simple blue emblem.
What the image evokes.
The foamy line gives the cover a sense of movement: the sea seems to be arriving or retreating, leaving the sand briefly exposed. Its uneven curve draws the eye down through the image, while the black panel holds the composition still and gives the lettering and emblem a formal, almost ceremonial presence.
There is a quiet, contemplative quality in the empty stretch of beach and the small traces left upon it. The impressions and dark tangle near the bottom could suggest a passing presence, but they remain ordinary, ambiguous details rather than a definite narrative. The muted photograph feels weathered and intimate; the crisp blue harp and orange lettering introduce a more composed, emblematic note. Together, these elements balance a fleeting natural scene with the permanence implied by a printed title and symbol.
