Inside the image.
A square cover in a restricted palette of deep maroon, dark brown and dusty rose, with pale lettering and a more brightly coloured red title. Two people occupy the right half: a young woman in front and a taller man close behind her. The woman is shown from the chest up, her head tilted slightly back and mouth open; the man leans towards her, also with his mouth open. His bent arm crosses in front of her at chest level, and their hands meet near the lower centre. Both figures are cropped by the right and bottom edges. The man wears a light shirt with rolled sleeves and a dark waistcoat; the woman’s clothing is mostly obscured by the arm and the crop. Their faces and the man’s shirt are the lightest areas, standing out against the dark ground.
The background is filled edge to edge with a dim, reddish-brown image of theatrical masks and other loosely sketched, overlapping forms. A large face-like mask is visible at lower left, while further mask shapes and curved, indistinct marks appear behind the title and figures. The forms are low in contrast and partly obscured, so they read as a layered decorative backdrop rather than a clearly defined setting. The figures appear photographic, with soft tonal shading and a monochrome, rose-tinted treatment; the background has a drawn or printed appearance. The image has a slightly mottled, distressed look, especially in the dark areas, and no separate border.
At the upper left, a narrow line of small, pale uppercase lettering reads “CWMNI THEATR MEIRION”. Below it, the title “ER MWYN YFORY” dominates the left side in tall, irregular red capitals with thin pale edging and dark shadowing. The words are broken across three lines: “ER” above “MWYN”, then “YFORY” beneath, with thin red horizontal strokes extending around and between parts of the lettering. The title partly covers the faint background imagery and balances the larger photographic figures on the right.
What the image evokes.
The cover brings together two kinds of theatrical presence: the intimate, animated pair at the right and the shadowy procession of faces behind them. The figures’ open mouths suggest a moment caught in speech, song, or heightened emotion, though the still image leaves the exact action unresolved. Their closeness gives the scene a tender, almost protective quality, while the mask-like forms introduce a more watchful, uncanny note.
The dark red ground and the title’s sharp, outlined letters evoke the look of a theatre bill or a worn stage poster. Against that graphic boldness, the softly rendered faces feel immediate and human. The result holds a curious balance between romance and unease: warmth gathers around the people, but the background seems crowded with other expressions, as if the scene were taking place within a theatre of memory or imagination. That is only one possible reading; the indistinct backdrop also works as a dense, decorative texture, lending the cover its enclosing, nocturnal atmosphere.
