Gwlad I Mi 2
John ac Alun
Album artwork for John ac Alun, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square illustrated cover dominated by saturated cobalt blue and orange. A dense, all-over blue pattern of short interlocking strokes fills the background, with no separate border. Across it, large orange shapes edged and detailed in blue combine a map-like silhouette on the left with musical instruments across the centre and right. The forms overlap and run close to the edges, leaving little open space.
The largest object is an upright stringed instrument, likely a guitar, centred slightly left. Its long narrow neck rises almost to the top edge, with frets and strings picked out in blue, while its rounded body occupies much of the lower centre. Blue contours and curved parallel lines cross the body. A much larger, diagonally tilted stringed instrument stretches from the centre towards the upper right; its broad body and long neck are simplified into orange and blue outlines. Behind and around these instruments, an irregular orange silhouette resembling a map occupies the left side, with smaller cut-outs and projecting shapes. The overlapping outlines make it difficult to separate every form precisely.
The treatment is flat and graphic rather than photographic, using a restricted palette of vivid blue, orange and small areas of pale lettering. Fine blue linework describes the instruments against the orange, while the tightly repeated background marks create a restless, woven-looking texture. There is no realistic lighting or shading; the strong contrast and dense pattern give the image an almost screen-printed appearance, though the production method cannot be determined from the image alone.
Large lowercase lettering reading “gwlad i mi 2” spans the top. The letters are orange with pale edging and a dark blue shadow or outline, in a decorative serif style; the numeral 2 is set prominently at the upper right. Smaller pale text is grouped in three lines in the lower-right area: “Casgliad Gwych o”, “Ganeuon Gwlad” and “The Best of Welsh / Country Music -2”. It sits over the patterned blue ground and beside the instrument shapes. Some of the small lettering is slightly soft, but these words are readable.
What the image evokes.
The cover feels like a lively collision between a map and a music shop window: the land-like shape seems to turn into instruments, or the instruments seem to claim the map as their stage. Its two-colour contrast is immediate and emphatic, with orange forms pressing forward against blue marks that appear to vibrate behind them. The dense pattern keeps even the gaps busy, so the image has little stillness.
The oversized title has a theatrical, old-fashioned flourish, while the simplified instruments and restless ground suggest a more playful, hand-made graphic sensibility. The result can feel both folkloric and exuberant without settling into a solemn idea of heritage. The layered shapes invite a brief search for a coherent map or a single instrument, but their overlap resists a tidy reading; that ambiguity gives the cover much of its charm.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
