Geraint Jarman
Album artwork for Geraint Jarman, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square record sleeve combines a narrow white text band at the top and bottom with a dark, grainy colour photograph between them. The photograph is a tightly cropped group portrait of three people leaning close together. At left, a face is partly cut off by the frame; the person wears dark glasses and a thick, mottled brown garment or fur-like collar. In the centre, a dark-haired figure in dark glasses bends forward, their face largely in shadow. At right, a third figure is turned down and inward, with a bright yellow-white area of clothing or a light-coloured garment catching the light. The figures overlap and fill nearly all the photographic area, leaving a deep black background behind their heads and shoulders.
The image is dominated by black, olive green, and muddy brown, sharply interrupted by yellow and cream highlights on the faces and clothing. The lighting is uneven and high-contrast: some features emerge in luminous yellow-green patches while much of the central figure and background sinks into shadow. The photograph has a soft, coarse appearance, with the outlines and details blurred in places. A thin dark rule separates the photograph from the white bands. In the top band, bold black lettering is centred across two lines: “JARMAN/CYNGANEDDWYR” above “SUB NOT USED”. A small black-and-white emblem or mark sits at the far left, while “RECORDIAU” and “SAIN” appear at the far right. The lower band has “RECORDIAU” above “SAIN” at left, a large centred two-line inscription reading “EILYDD NA DDEFNYDDIWYD” and “POETS/JARMAN”, and a small green square image at the far right with “BAND” above it. The typography is condensed, heavy uppercase sans serif, contrasting with the blurred, crowded photograph.
What the image evokes.
The sleeve feels like a fragment of a larger, noisier scene caught at close range. The faces press together so tightly that the photograph becomes less a conventional group portrait than a knot of profiles, lenses, hair, and shoulders, with no clear space in which to settle the eye. The uneven yellow-green light makes the moment feel unstable: it could be a flash in a dark room, a glimpse through tinted glass, or simply a photograph whose shadows have swallowed much of its detail.
That darkness sits in productive tension with the crisp white bands and blunt, orderly lettering. The text feels like a label or caption firmly attached to an image that remains elusive and partly obscured. The composition has an archival, documentary quality, while the lurid highlights and close crop lend it an almost nocturnal, cinematic unease. The figures seem gathered together, yet their lowered faces and obscured expressions make the group difficult to read as either intimate or estranged. It holds both possibilities at once: a shared moment, and a scene glimpsed from outside.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
