A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A square photographic cover shows two men in dark suits seated closely behind a table, with their upper bodies filling most of the frame. The man on the left leans forward, resting his clasped hands on the tabletop; the man on the right sits more upright with his arms folded, one hand extending towards the right edge. Both face the camera. The left figure has shoulder-length dark hair and a beard, while the right figure has short, curly dark hair and a clean-shaven face. Their expressions are relaxed, with slight smiles.

The table runs across the lower edge of the photograph. A pale sheet or folded cloth lies on it near the right-hand figure, partly obscured by the lettering along the bottom. Behind the men is a warm brown, wood-like surface with horizontal grain and softly curved markings. The background is most visible across the top and in the narrow spaces around their shoulders. The figures overlap it closely, with no clear view beyond the room-like setting. The image is cropped tightly at the sides and bottom, and there is no separate border.

The palette is subdued: dark brown and black jackets, muted blue-grey shirts, warm tan and brown behind them, and pale cream lettering. Soft, warm light falls across the faces and hands, while the suits remain in deep shadow. The photograph has a slightly softened, low-contrast appearance, with visible tonal shading rather than hard-edged graphic shapes.

Large white uppercase lettering spans the top in two groups: “BRYN” above “TERFEL” at the upper left, and “RHYS” above “MEIRION” at the upper right. A fine, pale ornamental ampersand loops between the names, extending down over the background and into the space above the men. Across the bottom, the word “Benedictus” appears in large white, flowing script, overlapping the table and the lower part of the figures. The text is integrated directly over the photograph.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The close, forward-facing pose gives the cover the air of a formal portrait, but the men’s relaxed expressions and crossed and clasped hands soften its ceremony. The table and wood-toned background suggest an intimate indoor setting, almost like a meeting room or a quiet corner of a house. The image holds a balance between public presentation and personal ease.

The restrained brown palette and the delicate looping ampersand lend the design a measured, old-fashioned elegance. The names at the top feel orderly and declarative, while the broad handwritten lettering below loosens that structure, like a flourish added to a carefully composed portrait. The decorative loop visually links the two names and hovers between the figures, giving the otherwise grounded photograph a light, almost calligraphic movement.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
