Endaf Emlyn
Album artwork for Endaf Emlyn, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover is filled by a close-up image of long, fine feathers sweeping diagonally across a dark ground. Their pale shafts and delicate barbs emerge from the left and lower-left edges, arcing and trailing towards the right. A broad, soft mass of white and silvery feathering occupies the upper-right area, with wispy strands extending over the darker centre and lower-right. The feathers overlap in layers: a few sharply defined strands cross the black area, while others fade into a hazy, cool-toned background. No border is visible.
The palette moves from pale blue-grey and white at the top and right to near-black, with a hint of deep plum, across the lower half. Fine highlights pick out the feather fibres against the shadow, and the upper background has a soft, cloudy, slightly blurred appearance. The image is photographic in appearance, with a shallow sense of depth created by the sharp foreground strands and softer forms behind them.
Small, dark serif lettering reading “endaf emlyn” sits near the top centre over the pale background. Large, pale lettering reading “GEU WEDD” is centred near the bottom, partly over the black ground. Its high-contrast serif forms are decorative, with narrow strokes and curved, cut-out-looking details; the lower wordmark nearly spans the width of the cover. Both inscriptions sit directly over the image.
What the image evokes.
The feathers make the image feel suspended between softness and sharpness. Their fine barbs resemble hair-thin lines drawn across darkness, while the larger pale plume at the right dissolves into something like mist or a cloud. This interplay gives the cover a quiet, nocturnal quality, though the bright upper field also suggests open air and light.
The diagonal sweep lends the still image a sense of movement, as if the feathers have just been lifted or are drifting out of frame. Against the nearly black lower half, the pale forms can suggest a wing, a plume, or a veil, without settling into any one of those readings. The ornate lower lettering adds a formal, slightly antique note; its bold placement anchors the delicate image and makes the contrast between visual fragility and typographic weight especially striking.
