Inside the image.
A square, illustrated cover places a close, tender scene on the right against a broad, dark night sky. A woman in a deep green hood cradles a naked infant against her chest. Their faces turn towards one another: the woman bends down from the upper right, eyes lowered, while the baby rests across her arms with its head near the centre-right and one arm reaching towards the edge. Her hands support the infant’s head and body. The figures are cropped by the right and lower edges, making them feel close to the viewer. The hood forms several angular, overlapping folds in shades of green, with a grey inner edge framing her face; a dark garment is visible beneath it.
Behind them, a large circular glow of pale yellow and cream radiates into orange, red and dusky purple, fading to near-black across the upper and left portions of the image. A bright, many-pointed white star shines in the upper-left quadrant, with a fine vertical streak extending above and below it. Smaller white points are scattered nearby. Along the low horizon, a thin row of dark, blocky building silhouettes runs from the left edge towards the centre, above a flat red-orange band that spans the bottom of the background. The composition balances the luminous figures and halo on the right with open, sparsely marked darkness on the left.
The title lettering sits across the upper centre, aligned in stacked lines. Small white serif text reads “Gwawr y Geni”; below it, larger orange uppercase lettering reads “CÔR MEIBION” and, most prominently, “LLANELLI”. A fine pale horizontal line separates these words from the smaller white serif line “Song of Hope” beneath. The typography is centred over the sky and remains distinct against its dark background. The image has a smoothly blended, airbrushed-looking sky and glow, set against more crisply outlined figures and buildings. Its overall treatment is painterly illustration rather than photography, with softly modelled faces and skin and clean-edged folds in the clothing.
What the image evokes.
The scene has the intimacy of a private embrace, yet its scale is enlarged by the radiant disc behind the figures and the star set apart in the dark. The halo can suggest a moon, a sunrise, or a devotional aureole; the image leaves those readings open. The small settlement on the horizon grounds the scene in a quiet landscape, while the star makes the surrounding sky feel unusually vast.
The contrast between the near-black left side and the warmth around the mother and child gives the cover a feeling of shelter: the figures seem gathered into a pocket of light. At the same time, the star’s sharp points and the hood’s geometric folds introduce a crisp, almost emblematic quality alongside the softness of skin and touch. The result sits between a tender domestic image and a more ceremonial, iconic one. The stacked serif lettering and restrained palette lend it a formal, traditional air, while the glowing colour transitions give the scene a dreamlike softness.
