Telynau Bro Ystwyth
Album artwork for Telynau Bro Ystwyth, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover combines a waterfall photograph with a broad, translucent-looking purple band down the left side. The main cascade occupies the centre and right: water pours from the upper edge over dark rocks, spreads into a foamy white fall, and drops again through a narrow cleft towards the bottom. At its base, a calmer dark pool crosses the middle of the image. Moss, shrubs and other vegetation cling to the rocks around the water. On the far right, a narrow wooden stair or walkway with a railing follows the steep bank; a curved, partly visible structure also edges the scene at far left. The rocks and greenery are cut off by the square frame, making the waterfall feel enclosed by the surrounding terrain.
The purple area shades from muted mauve near the top to deeper violet below and partly veils the left-hand scenery. White uppercase lettering near its top reads “DELYTH, SIÂN / A THELYNIAU / BRO YSTWYTH”, arranged in three compact, centred lines. Below it, the much larger title “Cwlwm / Cân” is set on two lines in white serif lettering, with a slight dark shadow that helps it stand out against the purple. The title sits left of the waterfall, while the bright falling water provides the image’s strongest focal point. The cover has no visible outer border. Its photographic detail is somewhat soft, with a layered, composite appearance where the purple overlay meets the landscape.
What the image evokes.
The cover sets a forceful rush of water against the stillness of the lettering. The cascade seems to split the composition: the purple veil quietens one side, while the white water flashes through the centre like a tear in that coloured surface. This gives the scene a double character, at once a particular landscape and something slightly dreamlike, as if the waterfall were emerging from a memory.
The narrow stair at the right suggests a human route into the rugged setting, but it is dwarfed by the rocks and water. That small trace of access makes the landscape feel both inviting and difficult to enter. The old-fashioned weight of the large serif title adds a bookish, almost folkloric note, while the blurred purple band and layered photographic treatment lend the image an atmospheric, slightly dated quality. The result holds together serenity and turbulence: a place to linger beside, and a cascade too insistent to become merely decorative.
