Tales Of Inclination
Paula Gardiner
Album artwork for Paula Gardiner, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover places a large, pale portrait of a woman in the centre, set against a very dark background. She faces the viewer with her head turned only slightly, looking directly out with a composed expression. Her dark hair blends into the black area behind her; her face and the upper part of her chest are much more brightly lit. She wears dark clothing and dangling earrings, with a fine necklace visible at the base of her neck. The portrait has a photographic appearance, with softly defined edges and a subdued, slightly grainy finish.
Around her, shadowy green forms fill the sides and corners. They look like rounded, uneven folds or sculptural shapes, but their identity is unclear. On the left, a large green form rises from the bottom edge and curves inward behind the portrait, with another rounded shape above it. At right, two similar forms extend from the edge, one around the level of her head and one lower down. Their dark green surfaces have softly blended highlights and shadows, and a few small pale marks are visible on the lower-right form. A small blue-green circular glow near the upper-right corner, ringed by lighter concentric bands, resembles a luminous orb. The nearly black ground leaves little separation between the forms and the background, giving the portrait the strongest contrast and focus.
The artist's name, “paula gardiner”, stretches across the top in large, thin, lowercase orange letters. The text sits over the dark background and nearly reaches both side edges. Along the bottom, “TALES OF INCLINATION” appears in tall, narrow uppercase letters in muted lavender. It spans almost the full width and overlaps the lower part of the portrait, crossing the woman's chest and the surrounding green forms. The cover has no visible border. Its palette is dominated by black and deep green, with the face, orange lettering, lavender title and blue-green glow as the principal light accents.
What the image evokes.
The cover holds the woman between intimacy and strangeness. Her direct gaze is calm and close, almost as if she has stepped forward out of the dark to meet the viewer; the surrounding green shapes, by contrast, seem to press in from the edges without resolving into a recognisable setting. This tension makes the portrait feel both personal and slightly uncanny.
The small haloed light at upper right suggests a distant lamp, a moon seen through haze, or a self-contained pool of colour in the darkness. It draws the eye away from the face for a moment, while the orange name and lavender title give the composition a distinctly graphic, almost theatrical frame. The effect could recall a nocturnal stage or a dreamlike portrait: a human presence held in a shadowy world that remains deliberately hard to read. The green forms might be foliage, drapery or imagined terrain; none of those readings quite settles, and that uncertainty is part of the cover's quiet unease.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
