Côr Caerdydd
Côr Caerdydd
Album artwork for Côr Caerdydd, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover with a nearly solid black background. Across the upper half, eight brightly coloured musical-note symbols are arranged in a loose, rising and falling line, with generous black space between and around them. From left to right, the notes are yellow-orange, blue, red-orange, red, golden yellow, pink, green and blue. Each has a rounded note head and a thick, curved stem or flag; their soft, slightly fuzzy coloured edges stand out against the dark ground. The sequence sits mostly above the centre, with the two notes at the far left and right lower than the red and yellow notes near the top.
In the lower-left quadrant, beneath the notes, is a large yellow-orange inscription reading “Côr Caerdydd”. Its lettering is slanted and flowing, with broad brush-like strokes, flourished curves and a dark offset edge or shadow that helps separate it from the background. The initial C is especially large and sweeping; the remaining words continue to the right in smaller, tightly joined letters. The title occupies less width than the row of notes, leaving much of the lower and right portions empty. The image is a simple graphic composition rather than a depicted scene: flat black surrounds the vivid symbols and lettering, with no border, visible setting or additional objects.
What the image evokes.
The coloured notes feel like small signs of sound set loose in a dark space. Their uneven spacing and varied heights keep the row from becoming a rigid musical staff; instead, it suggests a tune being tossed from one point to another, or lights flickering in sequence. The black ground gives each colour a concentrated glow, while the repeated rounded shapes make the notes feel friendly and almost toy-like.
The lettering brings a different energy. Its sweeping, hand-painted appearance gives the lower part of the cover a sense of movement and flourish, as if the words themselves are being sung or written in one confident gesture. The contrast between that warm, decorative script and the clean, floating note symbols makes the image feel both informal and ceremonious: playful in its colours, but anchored by the prominent title. The spacious darkness can read as a stage or simply as quiet around the sound, leaving the bright marks to carry the whole composition.
