Ann!
Maldwyn Theatre Company
Boxed set artwork for Maldwyn Theatre Company, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover places a stage photograph against a nearly black, deep navy background. On the left, a young person is shown from about the waist up, turned slightly towards the right. They wear a pale grey-white hooded cloak or robe, with a large gathered hood framing their face and loose fabric draped over their shoulders and arms. Their mouth is open and their hands are clasped at chest level. A white garment shows at the neckline beneath the robe. The figure is brightly lit from the front and left, bringing out folds in the light fabric while leaving the surrounding stage in darkness.
A dark diagonal beam or rail crosses the lower-left foreground, partly obscuring the figure's robe; a narrow strip of warm brown wood is visible behind it near the bottom edge. The figure occupies most of the left half, while the right half is kept largely open for lettering. The image has no visible border. The contrast between the illuminated costume and face and the nearly black background makes the figure stand out sharply.
Large white lettering reading “Ann!” sits in the upper-right area. Its irregular, textured-looking serif forms are tall and widely spaced, with an exclamation mark. Beneath it, a much smaller line in pale grey capitals reads “CWMNI THEATR MALDWYN”. At the lower right, two lines of white italic lettering read “Y Sioe Gerdd” and “Wefreiddiol”. The type is set directly over the dark background, separate from the photographed figure. The cover combines a sharply lit theatrical photograph with simple overlaid typography.
What the image evokes.
The hood and enveloping pale cloth give the figure the air of someone caught between concealment and revelation. The face emerges from the folds with an intensity that makes the open mouth feel like a held note or an urgent call, while the clasped hands draw the eye back towards the body. The pose can suggest prayer or appeal, though the image leaves its precise meaning open.
The black space around the performer has the concentrated quiet of a darkened theatre: the costume appears almost to float out of it, and the diagonal object at the bottom hints at a stage edge without filling in the setting. This creates a tension between the intimacy of the close portrait and the sense of a public performance. The large, slightly rough-edged “Ann!” has a storybook or stage-bill quality, but its emphatic punctuation also makes it feel like a cry across the darkness. The result is both solemn and theatrical, with the warmly human face set against an otherwise cool, spare composition.
