Caneuon John Rutter (Yn Cynnwys Offeren I'r Meirw)
Cordydd
Album artwork for Cordydd, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover combines a photograph of a rough sea and dark shoreline with large Welsh and English lettering. The horizon runs across the image a little above the centre. Above it, a cloudy blue-grey sky fills the upper portion; breaks in the clouds near the top centre send pale shafts of light down towards the water. Below, waves spread across the lower half, with white foam breaking in the foreground and dark, irregular rocks or shoreline forms at the bottom corners and near the lower centre. The palette is mainly slate blue, grey and white, with deep near-black areas along the shore. The photograph has a soft, atmospheric appearance, especially in the clouded sky and distant water.
The main title sits across the upper-left and central area, overlapping the sky. Large bold rounded lettering reads “côrdydd” in white above “caneuon john rutter”; “caneuon” is white, while “john rutter” is picked out in muted gold. A small white line just beneath reads “yn cynnwys yr Offeren i’r Meirw”. The title is tightly arranged, with the words extending towards the right edge.
A smaller block of performer and credit text sits around the middle, over the horizon and upper water. At left, small white text reads “gyda with”; beneath it, “elin manahan thomas” appears in large lowercase lettering, with “elin” in gold and the remaining words in white and gold. A small line below reads “cyfarwyddwr cerdd musical director”. Under that, “sioned james” is set larger, with “sioned” in gold and “james” in white. Near the bottom, three centred lines of bold white capitals read “CÔRDYDD SING NEW WELSH TRANSLATIONS OF / JOHN RUTTER’S REQUIEM / AND OTHER SACRED PIECES”. The typography is crisp and high-contrast against the photograph, with the gold words providing the principal warm accent.
What the image evokes.
The image sets human lettering against an expansive, unsettled seascape. Its light is not a clear sunrise so much as a break in heavy cloud: the narrow rays feel transient, while the mass of sky and water remains sombre. Foam and dark rocks give the lower edge a physical weight, and the open horizon leaves a pause between the stormy foreground and the luminous sky.
The composition can suggest a threshold or passage, though it does not settle into a single symbolic reading. The gold names bring a restrained warmth to the cool photograph, while the white type echoes both the surf and the light in the clouds. The stacked title has the directness of a traditional record cover, but its placement over the weather and water keeps the image from feeling purely typographic. There is a tension between the ordered, carefully aligned text and the restless movement of waves; together they create an impression of solemnity tempered by a small, distant opening towards brightness.
Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.
