Bryn Terfel
Single artwork for Bryn Terfel, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover with a dark charcoal background and a large painted portrait filling most of the right-hand side. A broad-faced, bearded man is shown from the upper chest upwards, looking directly out at the viewer with a steady, unsmiling expression. His head is near the top edge, and his shoulders and pale blue clothing extend to the bottom edge. Thick, wavy brown hair spreads around his head and curls outward, especially on the right. His face is rendered in warm ochres, browns and pinkish tones, with darker shading around the eyes, nose and beard. Loose, visible brushwork gives the portrait an illustrative, painted appearance. A narrow pale blue strip, possibly part of the clothing or another shape, appears behind the hair at the far right; its form is unclear where it meets the edge.
The portrait is tightly cropped, with the figure partly cut off at the bottom and right. The left third remains largely open and dark, providing space for the lettering and a small charity logo. The name “Bryn Terfel” appears in large pale grey serif lettering in the upper-left area. Beneath it, two smaller lines of white uppercase serif text read “HAFAN GOBAITH” and “ANOTHER DAY”. The text is left-aligned, and the name is substantially larger than the title lines.
Near the lower left is a small colourful logo: a yellow sun with rays sits above a simple house motif with a red roof and small green details. Below it, “Hope House” is written in blue, informal, rounded lettering across two lines. Two smaller lines of pale lettering beneath read “Er budd Tŷ Gobaith yng Nghymru” and “In aid of Hope House in Wales”. The logo and text sit against the charcoal ground, with the lowest line close to the bottom edge. The overall palette is restrained and dark, with the portrait's warm face and hair, blue clothing, and the logo's bright yellow, red and green providing contrast.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the directness of a hand-painted portrait: the face meets the viewer without a surrounding scene or elaborate framing, and the dark field makes that encounter feel close and concentrated. The roughly handled hair and softly varied skin tones keep the image from feeling formal or photographic; they suggest the presence of a painter's hand, while the level gaze lends the subject a quiet gravity.
There is a striking contrast between the portrait's earthy, sombre palette and the small, bright house logo below. The logo feels almost like a separate, everyday sign—sunny and simple—set beside a portrait that is more introspective. The open dark area allows the lettering to sit clearly, but also leaves the face seeming to emerge from shadow. The result holds two moods at once: solemn and personal, yet touched by the modest warmth of the colourful emblem and its handwritten-style name.
