Côr Y Traeth
Album artwork for Côr Y Traeth, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover shows a suspension bridge at dusk or night, crossing a calm stretch of water from the left edge towards a low, built-up shore on the right. The bridge fills much of the left half: its pale deck angles slightly upwards into the distance, supported by a row of tall stone arches. Warm golden light falls across the arches and their inner curves, while the bridge’s fine cables and upright supports are visible against a deep blue evening sky. The nearest part of the bridge is cropped by the left edge.
The water occupies the lower half and mirrors the bridge, its arches and lights in long, wavering vertical streaks of gold, orange and white. The reflections are strongest below the arches and along the left edge; the centre and right foreground are dark blue and nearly black. On the far bank, small houses and other buildings cluster beneath a dark, uneven line of trees. Their windows and nearby streetlights make scattered points of amber and white. The sky shifts from a darker blue at the top to a lighter, dusky blue near the horizon. There is no visible border, and the open sky above the bridge provides a broad field for the main lettering.
Large white serif lettering reading “Côr y Traeth” is centred across the upper portion of the sky. Near the lower right, a compact block of small uppercase lettering reads “GOREUON CÔR Y TRAETH” and “THE BEST OF CÔR Y TRAETH MALE VOICE CHOIR”; beneath it, a smaller line reads “1977 – 1997”. The lettering is pale blue-white and aligned centrally within the block. The image is photographic in appearance, with the still, dark water and illuminated bridge creating a strong contrast between cool blues and warm lights.
What the image evokes.
The cover has the quiet drama of a place seen after dark, when familiar structures seem briefly transformed by their own lighting. The bridge’s repeated arches lend the scene a measured, almost processional rhythm, while their reflections loosen that order into trembling bands. The water doubles the architecture, but imperfectly: the bright forms stretch and break, as if the landscape were holding a memory rather than a precise mirror.
The cool sky and deep water make the lamps feel unusually intimate. Their amber glow suggests windows and human presence scattered along the shore, yet the houses remain small and distant. This gives the image a balance of connection and solitude: a route across the water, a settlement beyond it, and a broad dark foreground between viewer and far bank. The large, poised title sits above this scene like a calm announcement, while the smaller text at the bottom feels anchored to the darkness. Together, the image and lettering evoke a reflective, commemorative mood without resolving into a single story.
