Bytholwyrdd
Cor Rhuthun
Album artwork for Cor Rhuthun, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover on a near-black ground. Across the upper half, three narrow, upright photographic panels form an uneven row, with the centre panel taller than the two flanking it. The left panel shows a close view of pale, curved and branching forms against a dark, mottled background; the middle panel contains a steep triangular roof or gable built from small, pale stone-like blocks, with a rounded opening near its base; the right panel shows rough, weathered masonry and a dark projecting shape. The images have muted brown, grey and cream tones, with a worn, grainy appearance. Their edges are straight and the panels sit separately against the black background.
A low band of luminous yellow-green runs behind the panels' lower edges and the lettering beneath them. It is brightest around the centre and fades into darker olive and black towards the sides, where faint, soft-edged circular forms are visible. The word “RHUTHUN” is centred across this band in widely spaced, pale serif capitals. Below it, on a black field, “bytholwyrdd” appears very large in thin, rounded lowercase letters coloured vivid yellow-green. A smaller line of pale serif capitals beneath reads “GORELON 30 MLYNEDD 1981-2011”. The lettering is centred and occupies most of the cover's width. The design combines photographic fragments, strong horizontal colour fields and carefully arranged type, with no visible outer border.
What the image evokes.
The three stone and branch-like fragments suggest a place encountered in pieces: a wall, a roofline, an opening, the sweep of a tree or carved structure. Their narrow, upright framing gives them the quality of glimpses through slits, while the larger central panel lends the tiled gable a quiet prominence. The images feel tactile and aged, set against a ground so dark that they seem to emerge from it rather than sit in a fully described landscape.
The green glow introduces a striking counterweight to the muted masonry. It could suggest vegetation, moss or a hazy light at dusk, though it remains an abstract band rather than a literal scene. The poised, widely tracked place name has a commemorative, almost ceremonial air; the oversized green title below feels more immediate and fluid. Together, these elements hold a tension between the solidity of stone and the softer impressions of growth and memory. The cover has the feel of a restrained collage or a sequence of architectural details gathered into a personal emblem, leaving the fragments open to more than one reading.
