Côr Telyn Teilo
Album artwork for Côr Telyn Teilo, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a blue patterned backdrop, a black title panel and a large group photograph. The photograph occupies most of the lower half, set inside a narrow pale border and a thicker reddish-brown frame. It shows a large choir arranged in several rows around a seated man in a dark suit at the centre. Most of the choir members wear white tops with red neck details and long red skirts; a few in the rear rows appear to wear dark trousers. A tall wooden harp rises behind the central figure, its curved neck reaching above the group. The members face the camera, with the front row seated and those behind standing closely together.
The group portrait sits across a blue background filled with repeated, oversized white and pale-blue calligraphic lettering and flourishes. Some of these forms are cropped by the cover edges or obscured by the photograph. At the upper left, a vertical black rectangle carries a prominent red-and-white ornamental title. The title panel overlaps the patterned ground and extends down to meet the photograph. Beneath the portrait, a black strip contains the white inscription “1970 ~ 1991”.
The palette contrasts saturated cobalt and navy blues with the white lettering and clothing, bright red skirts, and the warm brown tones of the photo frame and harp. The choir photograph has a slightly soft, grainy appearance and a warmer, more subdued colour balance than the crisp, high-contrast graphic elements around it. The lettering is highly decorative: the title uses interlocking red forms edged in white, while the larger background script is pale and flowing. The cover is a collage of a posed colour photograph and graphic design, with no visible scene beyond the backdrop and the group portrait.
What the image evokes.
The cover sets a carefully ordered human tableau against writing that seems to move in every direction. The choir’s repeated white-and-red outfits and straight rows suggest ceremony and collective discipline, while the blue script loops and sweeps around them like a decorative current. The photograph’s frame makes the gathering feel like a keepsake or formal record, yet its unusual placement within a field of giant lettering gives the image an emphatically designed, almost theatrical presence.
The harp adds a vertical accent at the centre, a quiet visual counterpoint to the broad line of seated figures. The contrast between its carved wooden curves and the flat black title panel, as well as between the subdued portrait and the vivid blue surround, gives the composition the feel of a family album page enlarged into a poster. The combination is both stately and warmly communal: formal in its arrangement, but softened by the closeness of the group and the central seated figure.
