Y Gorwel Porffor
Gwenan Gibbard
Album artwork for Gwenan Gibbard, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover shows a stylised sailing ship on a flat expanse of purple water beneath a glowing, gradient sky. The ship sits left of centre, low in the frame, with its bow pointing to the right. Its white sails are arranged in several overlapping tiers, marked by dark horizontal spars and fine rigging; a dark hull and small mast details anchor the pale shape. The ship appears to skim the water, with a faint, broken reflection or wake spreading below it.
A straight horizon crosses the image just below its midpoint. Above it, the sky shifts from very dark plum at the top and upper corners to muted mauve and pale lilac behind and to the right of the ship. Below, the water is brighter violet, with broad horizontal bands and soft, blurred streaks that suggest ripples and reflected light. The scene has no visible border. Open water and sky leave generous space around the vessel, especially to the right and across the upper half.
In the upper-right area, a small white handwritten-style line reads “y gorwel porffor”. Beneath it, much larger bold white capitals are set on two lines: “GWENAN” and “GIBBARD”. The block is right of the ship and close to the top edge, with tightly packed, irregularly edged letters that have a rough, cut-out appearance. The cover is an illustration rather than a photograph, using simplified, crisp shapes for the ship against softly blended colour fields; the water’s horizontal smudges provide the main surface variation.
What the image evokes.
The image balances the solidity of the ship’s stacked sails with the smooth, almost weightless space around it. Its crisp white forms look as if they have been cut from paper and set against a sky that seems to glow from within. The vessel is small against the broad bands of colour, so the scene can feel both calm and exposed: a crafted object moving through an immense, quiet field.
The intense purples give the seascape an otherworldly cast. The level horizon and lateral streaks of water suggest stillness, while the ship’s angled bow and layered rigging introduce direction and purpose. The title’s hand-drawn line has a softer, lyrical quality beside the emphatic, blocky name, setting intimacy against announcement. The overall effect recalls a pared-back storybook image or a theatrical stage set, though the uncluttered sea leaves its meaning open: it might suggest passage, solitude, or simply the pleasure of a bright vessel against a violet dusk.
