Boxed set artwork for Deugain Sain, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a dim, partly obscured photograph with large, looping bands of translucent colour. The main forms are broad curved ribbons that sweep diagonally and vertically across the frame, overlapping one another and the photographic background. Turquoise and pale blue occupy much of the left side and lower left; a wide purple band arcs from the upper left towards the lower centre; yellow and ochre curves cross the upper middle; and deep red, maroon and violet shapes run down the right. Their translucent overlaps create darker, mixed-colour areas.
Behind the ribbons is a softly focused scene with vertical architectural or window-like divisions and indistinct pale shapes. A few patches of blue, green and warm brown are visible near the bottom and left, but the underlying subject is too obscured to identify confidently. The curves fill the image and extend beyond its edges, leaving little open space. The strongest contrast is at the upper right, where pale lettering and a bright yellow numeral stand out against the dark red and purple background.
In the upper-right quadrant, small white uppercase text reads “DEUGAIN” above the larger word “SAIN”. Beneath it, an oversized yellow “40” is set in narrow, simple numerals, with the zero overlapping the red and purple forms. Near the lower right is a tilted, pale blue-grey plaque with a shaded, slightly dimensional appearance. It bears a stylised blue “4” and yellow “0”, with the word “MLYNEDD” in white capitals on a dark strip below. The artwork has a layered, graphic treatment, mixing the indistinct photograph with smooth, saturated curved shapes and shaded lettering elements.
What the image evokes.
The looping bands make the cover feel in motion: they wind across one another like broad streamers, or like colour seen through curved glass. Their scale gives them a playful, almost celebratory quality, while the obscured photograph underneath adds a quieter, more everyday counterpoint. The result holds two kinds of space together: a hazy place glimpsed through layers and a bold, flattened design that insists on the surface.
The shifting transparencies suggest stained glass or coloured light falling across a window, though the ribbons remain too smooth and regular to feel like fragments of glass. The yellow curves bring warmth and brightness; the cool blues and purples temper it, and the dark right-hand bands lend the composition a more dramatic edge. The small tilted plaque reads like a badge laid over the larger design, giving the sweeping shapes a point of visual punctuation. The cover can feel festive, but its density and shadowed colours keep it from becoming simply cheerful.
