A CLOSER LOOK / 01

Inside the image.

A mostly black-and-white cover places an ornate, right-facing human profile across the left and centre of the square image. The head and shoulders form a dense silhouette, filled with intricate curling lines, small ornamental motifs and scrollwork. The profile’s forehead, nose, lips and chin project against the white background at the right edge of the figure; the lower outline broadens into a patterned shoulder or garment that sweeps across the bottom. Fine dark contours and white gaps give the silhouette a pierced, filigree-like appearance.

Within the upper part of the head is a separate, roughly circular scene. A large dark tree stands against a pale blue and white ground, its thick trunk dividing into branches that spread through a delicate network of smaller twigs. Near the trunk, a small dark human-like figure appears in profile, facing right; pale blue shapes behind the tree suggest a distant landscape or sky. The circular scene is enclosed by a thick, irregular ornamental ring, itself decorated with repeated curls and small circular details. Its lower edge overlaps the patterned head and neck, making the landscape appear like an inset window within the profile.

The figure is predominantly black and white, with pale blue confined to parts of the inset scene. The background is plain white, leaving a generous strip of empty space on the right. In that strip, widely spaced uppercase letters run vertically down the cover, spelling “MEIC STEVENS · Y BALEDI”; the lettering is thin, grey and sans serif. Inside the ornate figure, a small decorative inscription near the centre appears to read “Dau Oned”, while large curving numerals lower down appear to read “9900”. The overall image is a finely detailed illustration rather than a photograph, with the contrast between the white ground and dense black linework defining its shape and texture.

ASSOCIATIONS & IMPRESSIONS / 02

What the image evokes.

The profile seems to hold a small world inside its head: branches cross the pale opening like thoughts or memories taking root, while the tiny figure beside the trunk gives the scene a quiet, solitary scale. The enclosing ring could be read as a window, a mirror, or a medallion, though it is also continuous with the elaborate ornament of the surrounding figure.

The curling blackwork has the richness of engraved metalwork or an intricately carved frame. Against it, the spare white background and narrow column of lettering feel unusually still. That contrast makes the cover hover between intimate portrait and decorative emblem, between a face that might be seen in a crowd and an object meant to be examined closely. The pale blue in the inset offers a small breath of openness within the tightly woven monochrome design; the mood is contemplative, but the dense ornament gives it a faintly uncanny edge.

Associations are subjective readings, rather than documented influences or statements of the artist’s intention.

Lettering & observation notes
  • MEIC STEVENS · Y BALEDI — Thin, widely spaced vertical lettering along the right side.
  • Dau Oned — Small decorative lettering near the centre of the ornate profile.
  • 9900 — Large curving numerals across the lower middle of the profile.
  • The small decorative inscription appears to read “Dau Oned”, but its ornate lettering makes the reading uncertain. The large numerals appear to be “9900”; their intended reading is unclear.
