Dafydd Edwards/gwawr Edwards
Album artwork for Dafydd Edwards/gwawr Edwards, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines two head-and-shoulders portraits with a dark, layered background. Near the upper centre, a large rectangular photograph is divided vertically into two panels: on the left, an older man with swept-back grey hair smiles at the camera, wearing a dark red shirt; on the right, a blonde woman with long, tightly curled hair smiles towards the camera, wearing a dark top and dangling earrings. Their faces occupy most of the upper half of the rectangle. The pale wall behind the man is cream, while the area behind the woman is a cool, muted blue-green. The portrait panels meet at a straight central seam.
The surrounding cover is predominantly black. Behind and around the portraits, narrow orange and red streaks run horizontally, with a bright yellow-orange line especially prominent along the left edge and behind the lower part of the portrait. Across the bottom, the image becomes busier: dark reddish-brown shapes and fine, slanting highlights overlap a shadowy band, with what appears to be a faint keyboard-like pattern near the lower left. Some of this imagery is obscured by the lettering and is difficult to distinguish. The portraits and background appear photographic or photo-based, with a layered, composite arrangement.
At the top, above the portraits, the title “tu hwnt i’r sêr” is set in large pale yellow italic lettering. The letters have a flowing, high-contrast, calligraphic appearance and sit against the black space. Across the lower part of the cover, overlapping the darker imagery, a much larger pale grey-white line reads “Dafydd & Gwawr Edwards”; it uses a decorative serif style and spans nearly the full width. Beneath it, a smaller line in light lettering reads “Cyfeiliodd Accompanist MENNA GRIFFITHS”. The text sits close to the lower edge, with the smallest line extending across much of the width. The overall palette contrasts the portraits’ pale skin and backgrounds with black, warm red-orange streaks, and the muted colours of the lower montage.
What the image evokes.
The cover brings together the directness of a posed portrait and the theatricality of a dark, streaked backdrop. The two faces are presented side by side with comparable scale and prominence, but the different colours behind them give each portrait its own small visual atmosphere: a warm, pale interior on the left and a cooler, hazier field on the right. Their smiles lend the image an approachable quality, while the black surround and fiery lines add a more dramatic, almost stage-lit edge.
The title’s loose, slanting script has the feel of a flourish written across a dark sign, and the broad name line below introduces a more formal, ornamental note. Their overlap with the shadowy lower montage makes the lettering feel embedded in a layered scene rather than placed in a clean, empty strip. The orange bands might suggest light moving across a stage or a polished surface, though they remain abstract. Together, the contrasting portrait panels, sweeping title and busy lower edge create an impression that is both personal and ceremonially presented: intimate faces framed with a touch of show-business drama.
