Rhapsodi
Glanaethwy & Da Capo
Album artwork for Glanaethwy & Da Capo, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square cover combines a photograph of a choir on a dark stage with sweeping purple graphic shapes and prominent lettering. The performers fill the lower half and centre, arranged in several close rows that rise towards the back on the right. At the far left, a person in dark clothing faces the group with one arm raised, as if conducting. The choir members wear mostly dark jackets and trousers, with a few lighter shirts and dresses; several stand at microphones. Their faces and clothing catch warm, reddish stage light against a nearly black background. The image is cropped close around the group, with some figures cut off at the right edge.
The upper background fades from muted mauve and plum near the top to deep charcoal behind the performers. Broad, translucent, curved bands sweep diagonally across it, like overlapping ribbons or arcs, and continue as layered waves along the bottom edge. A purple and grey ornamental shape at lower left frames a small yellow oval crossed by a pale lavender curve. The lower-right area is dark and relatively open behind several lines of small lettering. The lighting is strongest on faces and the front row, while the stage and outer edges remain in shadow.
Across the top, ‘Rhapsodi’ appears in white, slanted handwritten-style lettering; beside it, ‘Glanaethwy’ is much larger, in bright yellow serif letters. Beneath the latter, ‘& DA CAPO’ is set in pale pinkish white, with ‘DA CAPO’ in large bold capitals. Near the bottom right, a short Welsh inscription appears in yellow across three lines, followed by smaller pale text in English and Welsh. The lettering overlays the abstract background and sits above and beside the choir without obscuring its central figures. Overall, the cover mixes a stage photograph with smooth, digitally composed curves and high-contrast title typography.
What the image evokes.
The sweeping arcs make the cover feel as though it is framing a performance in motion. Their broad, looping shapes suggest sound waves or a flourish drawn through the air, while the choir itself forms a dense, grounded band beneath them. The contrast between the disciplined rows and the curves gives the composition both ceremony and movement.
The plum-and-black palette has a theatrical, almost nocturnal quality, set off by the yellow title and the warm light on the performers. That yellow can read like a spotlight translated into lettering: vivid and declarative against the subdued field. The mixture of elegant script, stately serif capitals and a live stage photograph also carries a formal, commemorative feel, though the layered shapes add a more decorative, contemporary finish. The result balances the immediacy of a captured performance with the polished, emblematic look of a concert programme or keepsake.
