Kenneth Bowen
Album artwork for Kenneth Bowen, provided through the SAIN Records collection on Wikimedia Commons.
Inside the image.
A square album cover combines a tightly cropped black-and-white portrait with white lettering on a nearly black background. A man's head and upper shoulders fill most of the left side. He faces directly out of the image, with his face placed slightly left of centre and cut off by the top and left edges; his dark jacket and shoulder descend into shadow at the bottom. His hair is swept back from a high forehead, and the even, frontal light picks out his brow, eyes, nose, cheeks and closed-mouth expression against deep shadows around the hair and jaw. The photograph has a soft, slightly grainy appearance and strong tonal contrast.
The portrait fades into the black field towards the lower edge and right side, leaving a broad column of dark negative space for the text. At upper right, “KENNETH / BOWEN” appears in two short lines of small, light-coloured uppercase serif lettering. Below it, the much larger title “MAE / HIRAETH / YN Y / MÔR” is centred in four compact lines of uppercase serif letters. Near the bottom right is a small block of Welsh text in pale lettering, followed by a separate italic English line and a further short italic credit. These small lines are aligned towards the right and are noticeably less prominent than the title. There is no visible border; the black background runs to the edges.
What the image evokes.
The face seems to emerge from darkness while remaining unusually close and direct. Its frontal gaze gives the cover the stillness of a formal studio portrait, but the shadowed edges and cropped framing make the encounter feel more private than ceremonial. The narrow division between face and lettering leaves the portrait and title in a quiet balance: one offers a human presence, the other a measured column of words.
The monochrome treatment and restrained serif typography evoke the spare dignity of older portraiture and printed songbooks, without fixing the design to a particular period. There is a melancholy undertow in the contrast between the illuminated face and the nearly empty black field. The compact title seems almost suspended beside him, while the fine italic lines at the bottom lend the darkness a hushed, reflective quality.
